Chelsea are set for another transfer window which will be dominated by the future of Conor Gallagher, it appears.

The Blues' midfielder was the stand-in captain for much of this season as Reece James struggled with injury. Mauricio Pochettino entrusted Gallagher to lead the team in his absence and the Englishman flourished.

His leadership abilities were there for all to see as Chelsea rescued a sixth-place finish in the Premier League but he could still be sold in the upcoming transfer window. In our latest look at the media headlines, the reason for this decision may have just been made clear.

Why Chelsea wish to sell Gallagher

According to The Athletic, one of the key reasons for wanting to sell Gallagher revolves around the fact he has just 12 months remaining on his contract. The summer is therefore the last chance the Blues have to make some money on the midfielder.

The reason it is believed his contract has been allowed to run so low is because the chiefs at the club were unsure whether he fit into the long-term plans for the team.

What football.london says: This indecision from the boardroom is indicative of the problems that Chelsea currently has with their transfer strategy. Being unable to identify who has a long-term future at Stamford Bridge and who doesn't should rightly be scrutinised. It became clear throughout the course of the campaign how integral Gallagher is to this squad but to allow the contract to drop into the last 12 months puts the Blues at risk of losing their midfielder to a rival on the cheap which would be a disaster.

Maresca suggests replacement

According to The Sun, Chelsea's new head coach Enzo Maresca has suggested a replacement for Gallagher should he leave. It is believed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is on the radar for the Blues having impressed the Italian in the Championship last season.

Dewsbury-Hall scored 12 goals and bagged 15 assists for Leicester City this season after deciding to stick with them despite relegation from the Premier League a year prior.

What football.london says: Dewsbury-Hall represents another sensible signing if they need to replace Gallagher in the summer. Chelsea cannot afford to keep splashing big money and surely the Leicester City midfielder would not command anywhere near the fee of a Joao Neves, for instance. But, the question remains whether ability-wise wise he is better than Gallagher, and currently that does not seem to be the case.
