Charlie Appleby will have a select team of two as he goes for consecutive victories in the Cazoo Epsom Derby.
The Godolphin trainer saddled Adayar to a four and a half length win from Mojo Star in the 2021 Derby and this time his two entrants are Walk Of Stars and Nahanni. Dubawi colt Walk Of Stars finished second in the Linfield Derby trial, just as Adayar did before claming glory on the Downs.
With a better start, three-year-old Walk Of Stars might have improved on his three-quarters of a neck defeat to Aidan O'Brien's United Nations, who is also a Derby entrant.
The general 16/1 about Walk Of Stars for the Derby, is coincidentally, the same price that Adayar went off at when he took the Derby.
Nahanni, meanwhile has remained unbeaten since second on debut at Kempton. The Frankel colt won the Coral Blue Riband Derby Trial and did so gamely by half a length from Charlie Fellowes' Grand Alliance. He also dwelt at the start in the trial like Walk Of Stars did and Appleby will be hoping for a better start at Epsom so he doesn't have to play catch up. Nahanni is an even loftier 25/1 for the Derby but Appleby is hopeful of solid runs from both horses. "We've got the Derby fast approaching us and we left the two horses in there yesterday in Walk Of Stars and Nahanni," Appleby told the Godolphin website. "Walk Of Stars has most definitely come forward mentally from that run at Lingfield. He's a big playboy still, but we're definitely very pleased with what we've seen since his run. "Nahanni hasn't been seen since his win at Epsom in the Blue Riband Trial. As a physical (specimen), we couldn't be any happier with the way he's done and work-wise he's just been picking up the gears each week. "We're looking forward to the pair of them going to Epsom." The Epsom Derby is considered the premier English Classic and takes places on Epsom Downs on Saturday, June 4. It is run over a distance of one mile and four furlongs and will be screened live on ITV Racing.
