World title holder and five times winner of the World Cup, Australian Excel travelled to the west coast of France as the man to beat, but he did not count in the determination and opportunism of De Ronde.

"His mistake in the first round was already a chance, and when he committed another one in the second round, I told myself he would not give me such a beautiful present very often... I only had to secure a clear round to grab the title and I was not shy to do so," De Ronde said.

In vaulting, a month before the finals in Brauschweig, Germany, Nicolas Andreani boosted his confidence with victory.

The Frenchman registered a score of 9. 154, two more points than his compatriot Ivan Nousse, who had to settle for second. Dutchman Koen Akkerman finished third.

"This gives me even more serenity and desire to win," Andreani said.

In the women's competition,Swiss Simone Keiser was victorious ahead of Carola Sneekes of the Netherlands and Manon Noël of France.
