Following last week’s opener in Madrid, won by Britain’s Michael Whitaker, focus shifts to Germany, where last year 70,000 spectators watched Nick Skelton and his horse Big Star emerge victorious.

Given this year’s programme, featuring Whitaker and most other riders who were on the start list in the Spanish sunshine, another similarly large crowd is on the cards.

Irishman Denis Lynch, who finished fourth in Madrid, and fifth-placed Harrie Smolders of the Netherlands will give Whitaker a run for his money, while Portuguese Luciana Diniz – who was close behind that pair in Spain – will also feature.

The Spanish contingent will be watered down from their strong showing in Madrid and only Sergio Alvarez Moya will travel to Germany. Their places will be filled by home nation riders, with world number one Christian Ahlmann and Marcus Ehning, Marco Kutscher and Ludger Beerbaum all flying the German flag.

These top riders meet in the initial classes on Friday, but the highlight of the weekend comes on Saturday with the eagerly-awaited Grand Prix.
