Lynch now stands 17th in the standings and with just an eighth in Geneva and a fifth in Stuttgart so far this campaign, his efforts in Germany are clearly his standout performance.

Tipperary-born Lynch remains without a Grand Prix win this season, although he did win La Baule’s Derby, when he fell during the lap of honour.

For a man who won the Grand Prix in Aachen in 2009, it has been an underwhelming campaign; even more so considering his omission from the Irish team at last summer's Olympic Games.

Lynch also missed out of the Beijing Games in 2008 due to a doping charge yet he remains one of the most refined and elegant riders on the circuit with a stable of excellent horses at his disposal, namely Lantinus and Abbervail van het Dingeshof.

Those assets - and his most recent performance in Germany - would suggest a return to the victory trail may not be far away.
