Loix, who won the first five stages of the race on Friday, led by one minute 38 seconds at the half-way point on Saturday with six of the 18 stages of the race still to come.

Ireland’s Craig Breen won four consecutive stages on Saturday morning, but remained 2:04 behind after SS12.

Loix, driving a ŠKODA Motorsport Fabia S2000, said: “I have quite a lot of experience here and also many rallies in Belgium are similar. I know the roads to be honest and everything together makes it a bit more easy for me. Yesterday a few times I was driving on the limit, today I am controlling.”

Nearest opponent Brian Bouffier, who won stage 12, admitted that he had no chance of overall victory.

“Freddy is not the target because he’s untouchable in this race,” said Bouffier, who is competing in a Peugeot 207 Super 2000. “He’s perfect on this rally and it’s impossible to catch him.”
