PSV Eindhoven have opened talks to sign Wolves and former Liverpool defender Ki-Jana Hoever this summer, according to a report.

The 20-year-old moved to Molineux from Anfield in summer 2020 in a second quickfire piece of business between the clubs. While Liverpool signed Diogo Jota, they let Hoever move to the West Midlands.

However, Jota has fared much better since then than Hoever has. The Netherlands Under-21 international has only played 25 times for Wolves, struggling under both Nuno Espirito Santo and Bruno Lage.

As a result, Hoever’s long-term future at the Premier League club is now unclear.

According to Voetbal International, Eredivisie giants PSV are looking to bring the defender back to the Netherlands.

They have already opened talks about a move for the former Ajax youth player, but the deal remains very much in its infancy.

Nevertheless, PSV want to slot Hoever in at either right-back or centre-back.

The defender mostly plays at right-back at Wolves, but has played in a more advanced role on the right too.

He can also feature at centre-back, playing there for Wolves‘ Under-23s in the EFL Trophy last season.

Indeed, while Hoever has struggled for first-team action, not all of his appearances for the club have come in the senior ranks.

Liverpool watching Hoever, Wolves future

Liverpool will be watching Hoever’s situation with intent after their negotiations with Wolves almost two years ago.

The Reds negotiated a 15 per cent sell-on clause in the £13million deal they struck with the Molineux club. As such, they would receive windfall if Wolves sold Hoever to PSV – or any interested club for that matter.

Hoever played 12 Premier League games in Nuno’s last season in charge at Wolves in the 2020/21 campaign. However, that figure decreased to eight in Lage’s first season as manager in 2021/22.

Injury was a reason for his game time going down, but Lage slammed Hoever for a lack of preparation leading to his injury against Crystal Palace in March.

“I have too many kids in my team that sometimes don’t work the way they should work,” the manager said.

“They do not prepare the way they should prepare and after, when they come inside [the team], these kinds of things happen.”

Wolves man needs fresh start

Hoever has struggled for form under two managers at Wolves now and his future at Molineux looks bleak.

He could yet regain Lage’s trust and continue to perform a role for the manager next season.

However, he could also be better off looking to move elsewhere.

Hoever’s career has yet to really take off and a move to re-establish himself with PSV would work. The sort of fee Wolves would be asking for is unclear and he could yet secure a loan move.
