Eric Bailly was forced off on a stretcher after a sickening clash of heads with teammate Harry Maguire in Manchester United’s FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.

The Ivorian centre-back backed into Olivier Giroud before Maguire attempted to head the ball clear, instead clattering the back of his teammate.

The blow left Bailly on the turf for several minutes before eventually rising to his feet.

While Maguire, whose head was bandaged, continued after more than 11 minutes of stoppage.

“Eric is in hospital,” confirmed Solskjaer. “They are going through the routine checks and protocols.

“I don’t know and I haven’t heard but of course it had a big big impact on the game.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sent on Anthony Martial, with a switch of formation, following Bailly’s injury.

And United went behind soon after the restart, as Giroud poked home Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross.

The Blues then doubled their lead shortly after the restart, with Mason Mount’s shot squirming under David de Gea’s arms.

A third came soon after through Maguire’s own-goal before Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the penalty spot.
