Erik ten Hag has given Manchester United more instructions on how he wants them to press, while explaining two ways they can improve.

Ten Hag preserved his perfect record from pre-season so far with a 3-1 win for Manchester United over Crystal Palace. Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho got their goals before Joel Ward pulled one back for their opponents.

Crystal Palace are the third opponent Ten Hag has beaten with Manchester United so far. There have also been wins over Liverpool and Melbourne Victory.

Now halfway through their pre-season schedule, Manchester United are still a work in progress but seem to have things to be optimistic about.

Ten Hag’s methods could be giving them new direction and he will hope what he has seen so far can translate successfully to competitive action.

Ten Hag told Man Utd’s official media channels: “We are happy with the improvement we see. Also there’s a lot of work to do.

“We scored some wonderful goals and that’s also true.”

United did, however, lose their clean sheet. They will have work to do in all phases of their game.

Explaining what they must do off the ball, Ten Hag said: “That is also the demand on the team. We press. We press all day.

“If we can, we do it high on the pitch. But if we can’t, we have to do that in a lower block.

“But also we have to press and we have to together, as a team.”

Asked how his players can improve, the Dutchman replied: “The timing, when you start the press, for instance. I see still switches we can avoid and we can prepare a better press.

“And I think also on the ball. We play well, but you see in the end when it’s two, three-nil up, the belief is increasing.

“Also on the ball, we can delay and we can postpone and we can invite opponents so that they come out and then speed up.

“I think especially 2-0 was a great goal.”

Erik ten Hag sends message to Man Utd attackers

Ten Hag was pleased to see an impact from his attacking players. As such, he wants them to maintain their form when the Premier League season gets underway next month.

He said: “I hope we can convince them. They do a lot of work, a lot of running and you see often with offense players that they miss that, that is what they think, in offense the energy.

“But you see they put a lot of energy in defence and they get rewarded by scoring goals because we’re winning balls high up the pitch.

“No opponent likes to get beyond the press in a defending line. I think it’s a big advantage when you can do that, but you need the whole team.”

Ten Hag will be hoping to further implement his principles in the remaining friendlies against Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano.
