Erik ten Hag has been praised for making the correct decision with Harry Maguire by a pundit who feels the Manchester United captain should be left out ‘indefinitely’.

Maguire was given the confidence of Ten Hag to continue as Manchester United captain when the new manager came in this summer. Subsequently, he started the first two matches of the Premier League season.

However, they both ended in defeat – to Brighton and Brentford respectively. Since then, Maguire has missed wins over Liverpool and Southampton.

Against Liverpool, Raphael Varane took his place next to summer signing, Lisandro Martinez. Then, Ten Hag stuck with the same pairing for the 1-0 win at Southampton on Saturday.

After consecutive victories and one clean sheet, it could spell trouble for the benched Maguire. According to pundit Frank McAvennie, he could struggle to get his place back now.

Asked by Football Insider for how long Maguire should be out of the starting lineup for Manchester United, McAvennie replied: “Indefinitely I think.

“I don’t think this manager has any problems leaving him on the bench. If you’re not doing it, you’re out. I’m all for it, I’ve not got any qualms about that.

“And he’s been proven right. Although they didn’t play well at the weekend, they were calmer.

“It embarrasses me that the players can’t do what they did against Liverpool against lower teams. The one thing that he did do right was leave Maguire out.

“When you keep a clean sheet that’s a good reflection on the goalkeeper and the defence so he’s clearly made the right choice.”

Harry Maguire could be kept out for trip to face former side

Manchester United are next in action when they visit Maguire’s former club, Leicester City, on Thursday. Whether they heed McAvennie’s advice to continue with the pairing of Martinez and Varane instead, only time will tell.

Maguire has 146 appearances to his name for Manchester United since joining them in 2019. He suffered a downturn in form last season, though, and it appears he may be struggling to pick his fortunes back up.

At the age of 29, he will hope to find some way to revive his career. However, he might just have to wait for his opportunity to become a regular again if he is to stay at Manchester United.

His contract at Old Trafford is due to expire in 2025. Although, there is the option for a further 12 months at the club for the England international. It is something he would have to earn, though.
