Erik ten Hag has convinced Manchester United to go after Lisandro Martinez instead of Pau Torres at centre-back, a report has claimed.

The Red Devils are looking for a new defensive signing this summer to bolster their ranks. The likes of Phil Jones, Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly have been in the ranks for a while but face uncertain futures.

In fact, the Manchester Evening News reports that United have made all three available for transfer this summer.

And Man Utd are wasting no time trying to get a new defender in.

They submitted a third bid for Ajax’s versatile defender Martinez on Friday, worth £43million. The latest offer trumps rivals Arsenal’s best effort, which matched United’s second proposal of £38million.

And while Ajax have yet to make a decision on Martinez, another report from the Manchester Evening News claims that new United boss Erik ten Hag  – formerly of Ajax – is dead set on reuniting with the 24-year-old.

The newspaper indeed reports that Ten Hag has won over recruitment staff by changing their mind on the club’s targets.

Old Trafford decision-makers initially wanted Villarreal’s Pau Torres. The 25-year-old Spaniard was United’s alternative to summer 2021 signing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

However, Ten Hag told his new employers that he did not want Torres. He instead convinced chiefs to look at talents from his former club.

Netherlands international Jurrien Timber was the initial top target for Ten Hag. However, it has become clear that Timber wants to stay at the Eredivisie giants.

Martinez, though, has reportedly told Ajax that he wants a move to the Premier League.  And while he did not want to force a move at first, he has now urged the Amsterdam club to resolve his future as quickly as possible.

This latest report on Ten Hag’s early Man Utd transfer business is a sign that he is having the desired effect on the club’s business.

For too long, United have made mistakes in the transfer market. They needed to loosen the reigns and allow the manager full control over business.

It is now clear with this report that United are giving Ten Hag exactly that.

While club chiefs have internally discussed deals, they have agreed to let Ten Hag run the rule over his targets.

And given the Dutchman’s connection with Martinez at Ajax, he needs help from those he knows well to get his new project up and running.
