Erik ten Hag sets timeframe to thrash out David De Gea contract talks after fine display against West Ham

David De Gea’s Manchester United future could be determined during the World Cup, according to Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils boss paid tribute to a fine display from the goalkeeper as United beat West Ham 1-0 on Sunday, courtesy of Marcus Rashford’s header and a number of late saves from De Gea.

Under contract to 2023, United hold the option of a further year for the Spaniard but reports have emerged suggesting a pay cut could be in the offing for his £375,000-a-week deal.

“This issue about negotiating [contracts], we said first we are focusing on the games,” Ten Hag said after the game.

“When we come to an end with this block, we have the World Cup and then we have to think about them.

“In the background we have our strategies for how to deal with it. It is clear already and I have already emphasised it several times, I am really happy with David. He is a great goalkeeper.

“He is only 31. He is fit. He can progress even more. He was already impressively good for Man United and I think he will do that in the future as well.”
