Paul Scholes is unsure whether Chelsea star Mason Mount has done enough to warrant a big-money move to Manchester United this summer.

Mount, 24, has spent his entire professional career with the Blues save for loan spells at Derby County and Vitesse. The England ace came up through the club’s youth system and has made 195 appearances in all competitions, scoring 33 goals. England came calling in 2019 and the Portsmouth-born midfielder has gone on to earn 35 caps for the Three Lions.

However, a series of niggling injuries have hampered his progress in 2022-2023.

Mount has made just 20 Premier League starts this term and found the net on three occasions.

And rumours that he could be seeking a new challenge this summer continue to do the rounds.

The man with five international goals has just one year left on his current Stamford Bridge deal.

And the likes of United and Arsenal have been linked with a swoop in the off-season.

Reports suggest that talks between player and club over a new contract have failed to yield any fruit.

The forward’s wage demands and the length of contract he is seeking are said to be sticking points in negotiations.

Therefore, it seems likely that he will move on before the start of next season. Chelsea will not want to risk losing him for nothing in 12 months’ time.

Manchester United are thought to be heading the race but Scholes is unsure of his qualities.

Mount yet to convince on the biggest stage

Scholes is rated as one of the best ever midfielders to play in the Premier League.

He has watched Mount develop in west London but has questioned whether he contributes enough against the league’s top teams.

“Look, I like Mason Mount… does he do enough?” he told Premier League Productions, via football.london. “I thought when he first came onto the scene, Chelsea ‘have got a new Frank Lampard?’

“I know we talked before about not comparing players to these types. But I expected him to score goals, a lot more goals, in big games, to win you games, he hasn’t really kicked on from there.

“I think a change of club might not be a bad thing for him.”

Pochettino may be key to Mount’s future

Frank Lampard’s temporary spell at Chelsea will end after Sunday’s season finale against Newcastle United.

Rumours persist that former Southampton and Tottenham chief Mauricio Pochettino will be in the dugout next term.

And it is said that the Argentinian tactician is a big fan of Chelsea’s number 19.

He may well have a say in whether the club offers Mount what he wants to stay at Stamford Bridge.

It is inevitable that any new manager will need to jettison some players, with the number brought in under the Todd Boehly regime.

But Scholes feels there is every reason to be optimistic that the good times might not be too far away.

“I think if I was a new coach going into that [Chelsea] squad I’d be excited about what’s there. I think there’s a lot of real talent,” he added.

“And I think he’s going to have to buy a couple of centre-halves, possibly a right-back, possibly a left-back, a whole new back four, I’m not sure about either goalkeeper.

“But I think going forward, I always look a team and I’m excited when they create chances.

“I think adding a centre-forward to that, they’re always going to create chances and if you’ve got a team who can score goals you’ve always got a chance.”
