Erling Haaland has backed himself to fit in perfectly at Manchester City, who have confirmed the striker’s arrival from Borussia Dortmund.

City have tried hard in recent transfer windows to sign an out-and-out centre-forward. They attempted to snare Harry Kane from Tottenham last summer, but Spurs stood firm.

Nevertheless, Haaland emerged as a more achievable objective and City paid an initial £51million to sign him.

The deal will rise to around £85million with bonuses and agents’ fees, but City boss Pep Guardiola believes it is a price worth paying.

And Haaland, who grew up watching City, has revealed in his first interview his confidence about starring at the Etihad Stadium.

“This is a proud day for me and my family,” the Norwegian told his new club’s official website.

“I have always watched City and have loved doing so in recent seasons. You can’t help but admire their style of play, it’s exciting and they create a lot of chances, which is perfect for a player like me.

“There are so many world-class players in this squad and Pep is one of the greatest managers of all time, so I believe I am in the right place to fulfil my ambitions.

“I want to score goals, win trophies and improve as a footballer and I am confident I can do that here. This is a great move for me and I can’t wait to get started in pre-season.”

Haaland arrives at City following an explosive rise in the past three seasons. He burst onto the scene with RB Salzburg in 2019/20, netting a hat-trick on his Champions League debut. He then scored against Liverpool at Anfield later in the group stages.

As such, Manchester United tried to sign him in December 2019, only for Dortmund to snap him up instead. In the Bundesliga, he scored 86 goals in 89 games after scoring 29 in 27 for Salzburg.

City director of football Txiki Begiristain added that Haaland’s “exceptional” goalscoring record proves he can star for his new club.

“Erling has everything we want in a striker and we are certain he will excel in this squad and this system,” Begiristain added.

“His rise has been remarkable, but he is still only 21. His best years are ahead of him and we are confident he can get even better working with Pep.

“This is a very exciting signing for our club, and I am sure our fans will enjoy watching Erling perform in this team.”

Man City add to attack

City already have a wealth of options up front, with Jack Grealish signing from Aston Villa for £100million last summer.

What’s more, City are ready to welcome River Plate’s Julian Alvarez to their attack after signing him in January.

However, the Haaland deal offers a new dimension to Guardiola’s attack.

City have relied on several players chipping in with between 10 and 20 goals for a number of seasons.

Haaland, though, will be looking to score over 20 goals a season by himself to help fire his new club to the Premier League title – with the Champions League another major aim.

It remains to be seen how exactly Guardiola will deploy Haaland around his other attackers. Even so, his addition to the Premier League is a welcome one.
