The defender, who made his debut for the League of Ireland side back in 2011, died at home on Sunday evening.
The cause of death is as of yet unknown.
His passing comes a day after he led Derry City to a 4-0 win against Drogheda United.
"This news is so hard to take in," said chairman Phil O'Doherty speaking to the BBC.
"He started the season so well and scored a really important goal against Shamrock Rovers recently.
"The players and management staff are in shock and it's an extremely tough time for everyone.
"He was incredibly respected. He was an ideal captain.
