It’s fair to say that the West Ham owners aren’t universally popular with the club’s fans.
But Karen Brady opened the void between the board and the supporters yet further on Wednesday night with a tone-deaf tweet that sent social media into meltdown.
West Ham have lost five in a row, haven’t won in seven and are just five points above the relegation zone (in far worse form than the three clubs immediately below them). And all of this comes with the background of the club’s largely unpopular move to the former Olympic Stadium in Stratford, which has been a financial success but not one that the fans have enjoyed.
So that’s the context.
And this is the tweet…
It was unwise to say the least from Lady Brady, who risked a huge backlash from fans about being ‘out of touch’ with the common supporter.
And, predictably, that backlash soon arrived:
In defence of Brady, we’d probably prefer Arsenal’s culinary smorgasbord to “cheap lager or a steaming hot bovril”…
But then that’s not really the point is it. Chairman, owners and board members at football clubs are routinely dismissed as out of touch with the ordinary supporter. And while that is true, of course, it is unwise of people like Brady to openly widen that divide – particularly at a time when people who actually support the club she’s in charge of are hurting.
