Gonzalo Higuain returns to Napoli for the first time since his mega-money move to bitter rivals Juventus last summer, and he has been warned to expect quite the homecoming.
The Argentina striker scored 36 goals in 35 league matches last season before his huge £75million switch to the Serie A champions in July 2016.
The move did not go down well with the supporters in Naples. So much so that he has been told to “expect hell” when he returns to the Stadio San Paolo.
The Napoli faithful have prepared ‘presents’ for their former hitman in the shape of toilet roll, which he features heavily on.
And ahead of the weekend’s clash, former Italy striker Paolo Rossi – who rejected the chance to move to Napoli during his career – says he can expect an uncomfortable evening.
“I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes,” Rossi told Gazzetta dello Sport. “His situation is certainly more difficult than mine was because he played for Napoli, but certainly for me it was hell.
“I managed to score a penalty, but each time I touched the ball there were crazy, deafening whistles. All I can tell him is that whistles make champions stronger.
“Unlike me, Higuain gave Napoli a lot and warrants recognition,” he said. “His choice should be respected, not forgetting that before him, [Edinson] Cavani and [Ezequiel] Lavezzi also both moved on.”
Higuain left in somewhat controversial circumstances, claiming that he “could not stand another minute” working for Napoli’s madcap owner Aurelio De Laurentiis.
De Laurentiis responded by calling the player “a disgrace” and “ungrateful”.
Not everybody is as angry with Higuain, however. Napoli’s head coach Maurizio Sarri claims that he won’t be given such a hard time.
“Naples has a generous public, and he did so much for us,” he has said. “There will be moments of anger from a public that feels betrayed, but in the end love prevails. He made history here.”
