The president of the UFC, Dana White, says that the much-hyped proposed fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather IS going to happen.
Speculation that the stars of the boxing and MMA world would meet in the ring has been rife of the last year, but the latest comments from White are the closest yet to a formal confirmation of the bout.
Speaking at UFC 210, White said:
I see this fight happening. Conor wants it, and Floyd wants it. I’ve said many times Conor has done a lot. He’s stepped up for big fights for this company, and for me and for [former UFC CEO] Lorenzo [Fertitta]. I can’t deny him this fight. Conor is having a baby any day now, and after Conor has his baby, Conor and I are going to meet in New York.
Both fighters have been happy to bad-mouth and blame the other for the lack of a certain date so far, with Mayweather regularly belittling McGregor’s financial ‘concerns’ and the Irishman keen to give himself time to train up to a higher standard for a sole-boxing bout.
June and September have been suggested as possible times for the fight, with the latter looking far more likely.
