Five-year-old Bradley Lowery melted the hearts of England fans when he led out the national team at Wembley on Sunday.
The five-year-old Sunderland fan is battling against cancer and has found a close friend in his hero Jermain Defoe during his family’s fundraising efforts.
And, in a moment that further warmed the hearts of England fans on a glorious spring day at Wembley, young Bradley took his place at the front of the team line, holding hands with Defoe, to lead the players out.
Dry eyes were in short supply and it wasn’t just at the ground where Bradley made a big impression: His appearance was greeted with a deluge of positivity on social media.
Sunday wasn’t the first time that Bradley and Defoe have met, with their friendship blossoming over the last few months, and the England striker also received plenty of praise for the role he’s played in raising the profile of the youngster’s cause.
Joe Hart, captain for the day, also deserves huge credit for stepping back into the line and allowing Bradley and Defoe to lead the team out, sacrificing what would have been a big personal moment for Bradley’s bigger fundraising cause.
It was a really special day for young Bradley, although he did struggle to cope with the noise inside Wembley that greeted his arrival.
But he soon adjusted to the noise and was back to his smiling, heart-melting best in time for the anthems.
Bradley’s family are running a fundraising campaign called Bradley’s Fight to help him win his fight against Cancer.
And as their website explains, it’s not been an easy five years for the Black Cats fan:
Bradley Lowery is five year’s old. At the age of 18 months he was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma and battled with it for over 2 until he was successful in beating the Cancer. He went into remission. In July 2016, Bradley relapsed. A very sad moment for us all. Specialist and progressive treatment for this kind of Cancer is not available in this country and to send Bradley abroad for specialist treatment we have started fundraising again. We need to keep fundraising to ensure we have enough money to fund very expensive treatments which may or may not work.
