Espanyol hit back at La Liga over Messi tweet

Both the Argentine superstar and his Barcelona team-mate were Ibrox targets when they were teenagers, according to former boss Alex McLeish

Espanyol have responded sarcastically to the suggestion made by La Liga’s official Twitter account that everyone in Barcelona believes Lionel Messi to be a god.

The Argentine was on target twice as the Catalans defeated Valencia 4-2 at Camp Nou on Sunday, and the social media account paid tribute to the 29-year-old on Monday morning.

“In Barcelona, Messi is like a religion,” it offered.

Only, they forgot about the city’s other top-flight side, Espanyol, who did not appear too happy with the suggestion that their club heroes were worthless.

“Not exactly, friends at La Liga. In Barcelona, we are actually quite polytheistic you know!” they prodded back, offering pictures of club legends Raul Tamudo, Maranon, Thomas N’Kono and John Lauridsen.
