ESPN moved up its annual ESPY Awards show from the MLB All-Star break to Father's Day night this year and changed the focus from athletic achievement to social achievement.

The COVID-19 outbreak has canceled, delayed and threatened sporting events and seasons since March. Americans' reactions to the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor have increased the desire for changes in race relations. Sunday's two-hour show acknowledged those narratives and provided recognition to people in the sports world who were dedicated to community service in the previous year.
