Essex police stop around 100 food delivery drivers in Colchester and seize 5 mopeds

DOZENS of food delivery drivers using mopeds have been stopped by police officers in Colchester as part of an on-going operation.

Essex Police’s Operation Callous, which targets moped-using food delivery drivers, has stopped around 100 individuals so far and has seized five mopeds, after the riders did not have appropriate licences.

The operation aims to crackdown on the riders which don’t have the appropriate driving licence or insurance.

As well as educating them on how to be safe around pedestrians and other drivers.

Police Constable Lee Mullen, who runs Operation Callous in Colchester’s Town Centre Team, spoke about how the operation is going so far.

He said: “Operation Callous is making sure that moped riders are aware of the Road Traffic Act and what they need to do to remain safe around drivers and pedestrians.

“The operation also aims to reduce violence against women by supporting our town centre team and engaging with female riders in the town centre.

“Through this operation we have stopped about 100 moped riders and educated them on the rules they must follow, seizing five of them as the riders did not have the appropriate license.

“We are now seeing a reduction in the number of riders using mopeds illegally, and we will continue to carry out this operation unannounced to make sure all riders are riding legally at all times.”
