Euro 2020 draw: Wales to meet Italy, Turkey and Switzerland in Group A

Wales were drawn with Italy, Switzerland and Turkey in Group A at Euro 2020, avoiding the trickier Group B where away trips to Russia and Denmark awaited as well as the world’s No1 ranked team, Belgium.

Instead they will begin their campaign on neutral ground in Baku against Switzerland, followed by a meeting with Turkey in the Azerbaijani capital too, before travelling to Rome to take on group favourites Italy.

“Logistically, looking at it it is Baku, Baku, Rome,” the manager Ryan Giggs said. “So rather than having Rome in the middle and having to go to Baku (twice) for us and the fans it is much better.

“At this stage they are all tough games, Switzerland are a good team and I watched their progress, Turkey were in a group with France and Iceland and did well to come out of that and of course Italy had a fantastic qualifying by winning every game.

“Hopefully Italy will have won all their games by then and maybe play their reserves or something. Hopefully by that time we are still in it and I don’t think it will make that much difference.”

The tournament will be the first European Championships to be played across the entire breadth of the continent, using 12 different venues from Dublin to Baku, beginning on Friday 12 June in Rome and culminating on Sunday 12 July in London.
