A Dean Henderson exit this summer – potentially to Tottenham – has been rocked after news of a brutal and untimely setback came to light.

The goalkeeper, 26, is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest. Steve Cooper’s side are a contender to sign Henderson outright once the campaign concludes, though that is only viable if they beat the drop.

Henderson had initially hoped to one day usurp David de Gea and become Man Utd’s No 1 goalkeeper. However, De Gea is primed to sign a multi-year contract extension and TEAMtalk learned Ten Hag was the driving force behind that development.

With De Gea set to stay, Football Insider claimed Henderson has realised it’s game over for his career at Old Trafford. With a place in England’s squad at Euro 2024 in his sights, Henderson cannot afford to warm the bench back in Manchester next year.

Tottenham subsequently emerged as a shock option, with chairman Daniel Levy deemed a ‘huge admirer’ of the stopper by FI.

Hugo Lloris is Spurs’ first choice at present. However, the veteran Frenchman looks well past his best with error-strewn displays an all too frequent occurrence in recent times.

But according to a fresh update from the Manchester Evening News, Henderson may cruelly be denied a chance to leave Man Utd this summer.

Henderson thigh injury requires surgery

That’s because the thigh injury that’s kept him out of action since January will reportedly require surgery.

The initial prognosis was the thigh tear would sideline Henderson for four to six weeks. The issue lingered well beyond that timeframe and the MEN now state an operation is required to repair the problem once and for all.

Henderson is thus facing a three-month lay-off that would rule him out of action until August. Much of the summer window will have passed by come that time and any club seeking to sign a new starting goalkeeper will likely already have acted.

As such, Henderson may be forced into remaining at Man Utd beyond the summer window. That’s likely to go down like a lead balloon with the player who previously ‘expressed resentment’ at his perceived mistreatment by former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

What’s more, prior to joining Forest on loan, Henderson savaged the club in an explosive interview with talkSPORT.
