Barton was absent from training at Marseille’s La Commanderie complex on Monday but coach Elie Baup has confirmed that the 30-year-old has been permitted to return to England this week to be by the side of his gravely-ill grandfather.
The midfielder is on loan in Ligue 1 from Premier League side Queens Park Rangers, and a 12-match suspension picked up on the final day of last season is being enforced by the LFP as well as the English FA.
But though this excludes Barton from Wednesday’s 'French Clasico' against Paris Saint Germain in the Coupe de la Ligue, as well as the league clash with Ajaccio on Sunday, he is nonetheless eligble for European competition.
Barton has participated in all three of the French club’s group stage contests so far this season, and Baup expects him to be back in training on Sunday and back to full match fitness for the visit of Bungesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach, who defeated OM 2-0 at Borussia-Park last week.
