Barcelona against Napoli is the stand out tie in the Europa League play-offs, with Rangers taking on Borussia Dortmund.

Barcelona find themselves trying to keep alive their hopes of European football after finishing third in their Champions League group behind Bayern Munich and Benfica. It is the first time since 2003-04, when Barcelona were in the UEFA Cup, that the Catalan club will not be in the knockout stages of the Champions League, a competition they have won five times. Napoli, winners of the competition in 1989, progressed from a Europa League group which included Leicester, who they beat 3-2 in the final group game in Naples.

Sevilla, who have won the competition a record six times, will have added incentive to add to that tally with this season’s final taking place at their Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium. Real Betis also see the final hosted in their home city and will play 2008 winners Zenit St Petersburg. The competition’s most successful club Sevilla were paired with Dinamo Zagreb.

Pep Guardiola has given his take on the Champions League draw error during his pre-match press conference ahead of their clash with Leeds tomorrow night.

He said: “You want an assessment about the draw? It is going to happen again.

“It is fair. It was a mistake. These things can happen, to managers, players and UEFA too. It is fair. It would be a mistake not to repeat, there would be suspicions.”

Part of me really wants to see the exact same ties drawn second time around. Then the other part of me doesn’t want this whole thing to be one giant waste of time.

There will certainly be a few angry clubs if this draw is significantly different from the first one.

Champions League draw

So who could the English teams face? Here are the permutations for each of Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea. Feels like deja vu.

Liverpool could face: PSG, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica, Inter Milan, Villarreal, RB Salzburg.

Manchester City could face: Atletico Madrid, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica, Inter Milan, Villarreal, RB Salzburg.

Manchester United could face: PSG, Atletico Madrid, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica, Inter Milan, RB Salzburg.

Chelsea could face: Ajax, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Lille.

So just a few minutes until the SECOND Champions League draw for the round of 16.

I am not sure I have a third in me, so let’s hope there’s no major errors this time around.

A reminder of the two pots:

Group winners: Manchester United, Lille, Juventus, Ajax, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Real Madrid.

Runners-up: PSG, Chelsea, Sporting Lisbon, Inter Milan, RB Salzburg, Atletico Madrid, Villarreal, Benfica.

Clubs from the same country cannot face one another in the last 16. You also cannot be drawn against a side from the same group.

Let’s hope UEFA remember all of that this time!

This is what UEFA had to say following the error. Sadly you feel someone is going to lose their job over all of this.

Here was the original draw which is now null and void. Will we get any of the same ties second time around?

  • Paris Saint-Germain vs Manchester United

  • Inter Milan vs Ajax

  • RB Salzburg vs Liverpool

  • Atletico Madrid vs Bayern Munich

Here is that Uefa statement which blamed a “technical problem” for the draw failure.

“Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. As a result of this, the draw has been declared void and will be entirely redone at 1500 CET.”

This is the moment when Manchester United’s ball – in the second pot from the right, back row – was not included in the Atletico Madrid draw.

There are going to be some very upset fans who would have reacted quickly to the draw in order to secure cheap flights and hotels, only to find out that they might now be going to wrong the place and staying in the wrong city. Perhaps Uefa can compensate those few who’ve been stung...

Safe to say you won’t have seen this sort of sporting controversy since...well the F1 yesterday. But still, utterly bizarre.

12:53 , Dylan Terry

So just to confirm, the draw will now take place at 2pm GMT. The entirety of the original draw has been made void.

Safe to say there will be a few relieved Manchester United fans. Also safe to say a few Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City supporters may be a little angry.

I must be honest, I didn’t think a Champions League draw would have this level of controversy. I’m going to have to postpone my lunch.

Real Madrid are said to be asking that if a re-draw does take place that it begin after they were drawn against Benfica. The mistake came after that.

So we’ve got Paris Saint-Germain vs Manchester United in the Champions League and Barcelona vs Napoli in the Europa League.

Having said that, there are still murmurs that the Champions League draw may be done again due to the mistake involving Atletico Madrid and Manchester United.

Will keep you updated if an official statement is released by UEFA.

Europa League draw

12:11 , Dylan Terry

I’ve made a mistake myself! West Ham will not be drawn today. It is only the runners-up of each group and the teams dropping down from the Champions League.

West Ham will then meet one of those teams in the last 16.

Europa League draw

12:10 , Dylan Terry

So the big teams involved in this draw include Rangers, Sevilla and Barcelona. It will be quite incredible to see Barcelona in the Europa League.

The Catalan giants were knocked out of the Champions League group stages for the first time in 20 years.

Europa League draw

12:09 , Dylan Terry

You have to feel for Uefa deputy general secretary Giorgio Marchetti. He now has to conduct this draw with the knowledge that he just oversaw a calamitous Champions League draw.

Tough job.

Champions League draw controversy! Find out all that went on here...

Were Manchester United ‘left out’ of the Champions League draw?

Europa League draw

12:04 , Dylan Terry

Bizarrely there are now 24 teams in the second round of the Europa League, so we can’t call it the last 16.

Instead, the runners-up of each group will face a side dropping down from the Champions League. Then the winners of those ties will meet the group winners in the last 16.

Europa League draw

12:01 , Dylan Terry

Right, now for the Europa League draw. Surely they can’t fudge this one up as well?!

Champions League draw

11:59 , Dylan Terry

As we wait for the Europa League draw, the fallout of the error in the Champions League draw continues.

Manchester United were left out of the pot for Atletico Madrid but then mistakenly included in the pot for Villarreal.

Could there be a re-draw?

Champions League draw

11:53 , Dylan Terry

You have to say Liverpool will be over the moon with this draw.

Champions League draw

11:48 , Dylan Terry

Manchester City take on Villarreal. They’ll be confident of qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Champions League draw

11:43 , Dylan Terry

So Manchester United fans, concerned?

Europa League draw

11:38 , Dylan Terry

A reminder that the Europa League draw is coming up very shortly. West Ham are involved in that one so stick around for more European ties.

Champions League draw

11:37 , Dylan Terry

Chelsea face Lille. A kind draw for the defending champions?

Champions League draw

11:33 , Dylan Terry

Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool will be happy with their draws.

The defending European champions take on Lille as they avoid Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Manchester City face Villarreal - a side beaten twice by rivals Manchester United in the group stage.

And Liverpool take on Champions League knockout newbies RB Salzburg.

You have to favour the three English sides in those clashes.

Champions League draw

11:30 , Dylan Terry

So it’s Manchester United vs Paris Saint-Germain for a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. That’s the headline.

Messi vs Ronaldo. Pochettino vs Manchester United. If only there was a narrative to the tie?

Here is the full draw then. First legs to take place on the 15th/16th and 22nd/23rd of February.

We are now being explained the ‘technical procedure’. I don’t know about you but I had no idea pulling 16 balls out of a pot was so technical.

The 2022 Champions League final takes place in Saint-Petersburg which is why Andrey Arshavin is conducting the draw.

He has come onto the stage and is now being asked a series of rather dull questions. It’s almost as if he isn’t too fussed? Stunning.

Champions League draw

11:06 , Dylan Terry

The draw is taking place in Lyon. We seem to be approaching the end of the formalities. I’m hoping it will get going soon.

Champions League draw

11:02 , Dylan Terry

Eight countries are represented in the draw - England, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands and Austria.

The 16 teams have won the tournament 41 times between them.

Champions League draw

Something the TV coverage has just reminded me of is that the away goals rule is no longer in effect in the Champions League this season.

No more “they’ve scored one but it feels like two” type shenanigans this time around.

Champions League draw

10:58 , Dylan Terry

The draw is scheduled to take place at 11am GMT. Whether or not the ACTUAL draw begins then we don’t know. There could well be some red tape to cut before we get down to the draw.

Let’s see.

Champions League draw

10:57 , Dylan Terry

Manchester City are the bookies favourites to win the Champions League this season. They are often tipped to lift the trophy but are yet to do so since the big investment came in a decade ago.

Last season they finished runners-up after being beaten by Chelsea in the final. Can they go one step further this time around?

Champions League draw

10:53 , Dylan Terry

England’s group winners await their fate!

Champions League draw

10:48 , Dylan Terry

Who are your favourites for the Champions League this season? Three teams secured maximum points in the group stages - Liverpool, Ajax and Bayern Munich.

But then there were a number of sides who came on strong towards the end of the group - most notably Manchester City and Real Madrid.

It’s all to play for as we head into 2022.

Champions League draw

10:42 , Dylan Terry

Just 20 minutes to go now as Europe’s biggest clubs prepare to find out their destiny in the last 16 of the Champions League.

A quick reminder that after the draw there will be a short break before the Europa League draw commences at 12pm.

Champions League draw

10:37 , Dylan Terry

You can imagine the one team all the group winners will want to avoid is the star-studded Paris Saint-Germain.

The Ligue 1 leaders finished behind Manchester City in their Champions League group and will now face a tough test in the second round.

They could face Liverpool, Ajax, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester United or Juventus.

Champions League draw

10:33 , Dylan Terry

Just 30 minutes to go. Who do you want to see your team face?

Champions League draw

10:28 , Dylan Terry

So Chelsea fans, are you praying for a tie against Lille in the last 16? It certainly appears the easier of the four options.

Obviously they are the Ligue 1 champions and no pushover, but the 2020 winners Bayern, 13-time champions Real Madrid and ever-resurgent Ajax would be an almighty task in the second round.

Champions League draw

10:23 , Dylan Terry

So who could the English teams face? Here are the permutations for each of Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Liverpool could face: PSG, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica, Inter Milan, Villarreal, RB Salzburg.

Manchester City could face: Atletico Madrid, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica, Inter Milan, Villarreal, RB Salzburg.

Manchester United could face: PSG, Atletico Madrid, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica, Inter Milan, RB Salzburg.

Chelsea could face: Ajax, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Lille.

Champions League draw

10:18 , Dylan Terry

An Arsenal *legend shall be conducting the draw today. Andrey Arshavin is set to pull out the 16 balls to decide who faces who for a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League

*Is he a legend?

Champions League draw

10:13 , Dylan Terry

A reminder that the Champions League draw is set for 11am GMT and will then be followed shortly after by the Europa League draw.

Champions League draw

10:10 , Dylan Terry

So Liverpool won their group with six wins from six and will be confident whoever they are drawn against in the last 16.

Manchester United overcame a couple of wobbles to also finish top of their group, although you imagine Ralf Rangnick will want a kind draw as he continues to bed his players in to a new regime.

Manchester City finished above PSG in a tough group as they proved their Champions League credentials once more.

But Chelsea came up short following their draw to Zenit in the final game, a result which saw them drop to second behind Juventus.

Champions League draw

10:05 , Dylan Terry

Who do we want to see face one another in the last 16 of the Champions League? There promises to be some outstanding ties drawn in around one hour’s time.

Champions League draw

09:49 , Lawrence Ostlere

Follow live updates from the Champions League draw as the four English teams discover their fates.

The 2019 champions Liverpool are among the top seeds after winning their group with a perfect six-from-six record and are joined by fellow group winners and three-time European champions Manchester United, and the reigning Premier League champions Manchester City. Chelsea finished second in their group, however, and that means Thomas Tuchel’s reigning European champions will face one of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Ajax or Lille in the last 16.

The draw will now be made to determine first knockout round ties, scheduled to take place in February and March next year, which will see the remaining teams split into seeded and non-seeded sides ahead of the two-legged fixtures. No team can face a side from their own country or from their group.
