Andrea Pirlo scored a trademark free-kick as Juventus moved into the last four of the Europa League with a 2-1 second-leg win over Lyon.

The hosts started brightly and took the lead inside five minutes when Pirlo nestled his free-kick in the corner of Anthony Lopes’ goal.

But Lyon grew into the contest and drew level on the night when Gianluigi Buffon could only help Jimmy Briand’s header into the net before the half petered out, with the visitors happy to sit back despite needing a goal.

Carlos Tevez diverted a clever header into the top corner on the hour mark only to see the offside flag halt his celebrations, but Juventus did not have to wait long for their second goal as Claudio Marchisio’s speculative effort took a cruel deflection off Samuel Umtiti and found the bottom corner.

Lyon pressed for a route back into the match but, despite long spells of possession, lacked the creativity or cutting-edge to trouble the Italians.

3’ – TEVEZ GOES CLOSE! Tevez cuts inside and crashes a shot narrowly over the crossbar. Anthony Lopes was beaten.

4’ – GOAL! Juventus 1-0 Lyon (2-0 on agg). Pirlo takes a free-kick... Into the corner of the net! Was there any doubt? The man is a set-piece beast.

18’ – GOAL! Juventus 1-1 Lyon (2-1 on agg). Briand's header finds the net! Buffon will feel he could have done better with that. The Italian stopper got a hand to it, but could only help it into the goal.

62’ – DISALLOWED GOAL! Tevez flicks a header into the top corner and wheels away in delight... No goal! The offside flag denies him.

68’ – GOAL! Juventus 2-1 Lyon (3-1 on agg). Marchisio smacks a shot against Samuel Umtiti, who can only watch as the ball changes direction and finds the bottom corner.

87’ – GIOVINCO VOLLEY! Giovinco flicks the ball into the air and lashes a volley at goal... Just over.
