A stunning strike from Nick Powell gave Wigan Athletic a 1-1 draw with Rubin Kazan in the Europa League.

Powell, on loan from Manchester United, fired in a 25-yard effort in the first-half to cancel out Aleksandr Prudnikov’s goal for the Russian side.

With their first chance of the game the visitors took the lead when Chris Mavinga's stunning pass was neatly controlled by Prudnikov, who lashed the ball past Scott Carson from eight yards out.

That opened the game up with Aleksandr Ryazantsev going close to doubling their lead with a volley that flew wide from the edge of the box, while at the other end Jordi Gomez blazed the ball over from inside the box.

Against the run of play Wigan equalised with a low strike from Powell which flew into the bottom corner.

The second half sprang to life when Eremenko’s sliding shot was blocked by Stephen Crainey and at the other end substitute Marc-Antoine Fortune beat two players but shot straight at the keeper.

Fortune was denied by a stunning point-blank save in the closing minutes from his low shot but neither side was able to snatch a winner which keeps them both unbeaten in the competition.

8’ – CHANCE: Gomez's free-kick into the box finds Powell, whose low shot is blocked and his rebound is saved by the keeper

15' - GOAL: Wigan 0-1 Rubin Kazan - Prudnikov fires Rubin into the lead after a neat first touch before lashing the ball past Carson from eight yards out, where was the marking?

22' CHANCE: Ryazantsev lashes a volley narrowly wide from the edge of the box after a chipped ball in from Eremenko

24' CHANCE: Powell leaves the ball for Gomez who blasts the ball over from inside the box, he should have found the target from there

32' WIGAN GO CLOSE: Carson's long punt into the area is weakly punched away by the keeper and Holt's acrobatic effort is blocked

39' – GOAL: Wigan 1-1 Rubin - Powell fires a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner from 25 yards out

41' - CHANCE: Prudnikov scuffs his shot wide from the edge of the box, he should have done better

68’ – FORTUNE SHOT: The substitute goes on a good run but his shot is straight at the keeper

82’ - MCMANAMAN GOES CLOSE: The substitute’s shot from a tight angle at the back post is brilliantly blocked by Mavinga

90’+2 - CHANCE: Fortune’s shot from three yards out is brilliantly saved
