Manchester United will face the champions of Belgium Club Brugge in the first knockout round of the Europa League with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer likely to prioritise trying to win the competition in the New Year.

Solskjaer used the Group stage to give his young players vital first team experience but hinted at a shift in approach when he fielded a far stronger side in the final game against AZ Alkmaar in order to win the group.

Brugge struggled in their Champions League group, heavily beaten by both Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain at home, but they secured a 2-2 draw against Real in the Bernabeu back in October with ten men which will serve as a warning.

They also finished above Turkish champions Galatasaray to secure their place in the Europa League, although United should be too strong over two legs.

“I watched Club Brugge against PSG and Real Madrid,” Solskjaer told the club’s official website.

“They did well in the Champions League and they stayed in most of the games, with one or two bad defeats. “But they are a good team. They are top of the Belgian league and, funnily enough, I used to have their second goalkeeper, Ethan Horvath, at Molde so it will be good to see him again.   “They will be tough games but you are always going to get tough games as you head into the knockout stages. We are hoping to go through to the last 16.”

Arsenal will also focus their resources on trying to reach the final in Gdansk, having lost to Chelsea in last year’s final in Baku, but have been handed a tricky test against Olympiacos.

The Greek champions made things difficult for Tottenham in the Champions League, but club secretary David Miles confirmed the Europa League will be a top priority for whoever replaces Unai Emery.

“We have played Olympiacos quite a few times,” he told BT Sport. “We have good friendships. They are one of the best teams in Greece. We know they are strong. We take no-one for granted and will do our homework. This could be a route into the Champions League for next year, so I think this will be a priority."

Olympiacos coach Pedro Martins insisted he will pay no attention to his opponents' domestic troubles.

“It's a big challenge for us to play against Arsenal, last year's Uefa Europa League finalists," Martins told Uefa's official website. "They may not have started well in the Premier League this season, but they have great players, are dangerous and deserve our respect.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers look to have been given the easiest draw of the English clubs, taking on Espanyol who, despite topping their Europa League Group, are bottom of La Liga.

Celtic will also be happy with their draw after they were paired with FC Copenhagen, whose star player is the former Arsenal and Sunderland striker Nicklas Bendtner.

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers will face Portuguese club Braga, with fans warned about the dangers of misbehaving after Wolves fans were hit by batons by police during the 3-3 draw in their Group stage game, prompting an official complaint from the English club about they way their supporters had been treated.

Our verdict on the British clubs' last-32 ties

Wolves vs Espanyol

A very kind draw for Wolves, who are worth backing as a dark horse to win this competition given their form. Espanyol are bottom of La Liga, winning only two league games all season and Wolves have been playing well for months.

Verdict: Wolves win

Olympiacos vs Arsenal

The champions of Greece proved tough opposition for Tottenham Hotspur in the group stage of the Champions League and this an extremely tough draw for a flaky Arsenal side. The Gunners will need to improve dramatically on recent form under their new manager.

Verdict: Olympiacos win

Club Brugge vs Manchester United

What may seem a kind draw for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might be tougher than it looks. Brugge are a good team, although they were beaten heavily by both Real Madrid and PSG in the Champions League but United will still be confident of progress.

Verdict: Manchester United win

FC Copenhagen vs Celtic

Celtic have saved most of their best football for Europe this season and should have too much from the Danish champions over two legs. A long run in continental competitions is long overdue for Neil Lennon’s side.

Verdict: Celtic win

Rangers vs Braga

A tough tie to call as Braga have players with the technical ability to catch Rangers out, but they have not had a great season domestically so Steven Gerrard will be relatively happy. Fans, though, have been warned about the dangers of travelling after Wolves fans were attacked by police.

Verdict: Rangers win
