Evander Kane erupts for first-period hat trick, sets Sharks record

Hats went flying to the ice for Evander Kane, who absolutely lit up the Carolina Hurricanes in the first period of Wednesday night’s matchup. The winger ripped three goals past James Reimer in only 5:27 of ice time in the first frame.

What, like that’s hard?

Kane’s first tally opened the scoring midway through the first, after he capitalized on a loose puck in the slot and fired it past two moving defenders.

He followed up a few shifts later on the power play in almost exactly the same spot, pouncing on a rebound with a quick release to give San Jose a 2-1 lead.

To secure the hatty, Kane tipped a power-play shot-pass from the side of the crease to roof it in tight on Reimer to cue the flying hats. In doing so, Kane became the first player in franchise history to record such a feat in the opening period.

Before Wednesday’s game, Kane had only recorded a goal and an assist in three games to start the season. By the time I’ve finished writing this, Kane may just put three more away in the second period at the pace he’s on.
