The Australian's main rival, Frank Schleck, also competes as defending champion.

Evans was well off the pace at the Tirreno-Adriatico, finishing 32nd overall and nearly 13 minutes behind the leaders, and is looking to get race fit in France.

"Coming back to France has another significance now, but I still have another Tour to do and Criterium International is another step towards that," Evans said.

"It's usually a short, intense stage race.

"Of course the individual time trial and the hilltop finish will be important for GC (general classification)."

The race starts on Saturday with an 89.5km road race followed by a 6.5km individual time trial in the afternoon.

The 179km road race on Sunday completes the race.

This summer and autumn Evans will race the Tour de France, the London Olympics and the World Road Championships in the Netherlands.
