Everton could bring in two strikers before the end of the transfer window, as Frank Lampard will reportedly decide on whether to sign Ben Brereton Diaz.
The Toffees have been linked with multiple strikers this window. That is partly due to Richarlison leaving the club, leaving a hole up top.
The fallout has not been helped by an injury to Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Indeed, only one senior striker has been available to Lampard this season – Salomon Rondon.
That situation has meant goals have been hard to come by. Everton have scored twice in their three Premier League games so far, with one coming from an opposition player.
As such, the Toffees have been desperate for reinforcements. It seems a new striker is coming, in the form of Brighton’s Neal Maupay.
The Frenchman is reportedly having a medical at the club, ahead of a proposed three-year contract.
There might yet be another striker through the door at Goodison Park before the close of the transfer window.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reports that Lampard ‘will decide’ on the transfer of Chile forward Brereton Diaz ‘soon’.
Everton have been eyeing the striker up for a while, along with a few other Premier League clubs.
The 23-year-old had a top season in the Championship last campaign, scoring 22 goals. Indeed, Everton might well pull the trigger, and hand him a deserved step up to the top flight.
Brereton Diaz transfer may be overkill
Brereton Diaz is clearly a very good player, who could well make the step up to the Premier League. His stats in the Championship and at international level – four goals in 14 Chile appearances – highlight that.
However, Everton taking him on board might be overkill. At present, they are in a tough spot due to the lack of the depth they have up top.
However, should they sign both Maupay and Brereton Diaz, when Calvert-Lewin returns from injury, they would essentially have three first-team strikers to choose from.
That would no doubt lead to one of them missing out on a lot of football. As such, despite things looking rough right now, they may want to think about dealing with it for a little while, before things gradually improve.
There would be little point in spending a decent chunk of money on two players, for one to eventually miss out a fair bit down the line. Furthermore, Brereton Diaz could be the main man for another side, with a few teams circling for him.
