Everton are interested in bringing Matheus Pereira back to the Premier League, but face competition from Leicester City, according to reports.
Pereira has completed one full year in Saudi Arabia with Al Hilal after his departure from West Bromwich Albion. Back in the Premier League, he had managed 11 goals from 33 games in his first season in the English top flight.
Now, it could be time for the 26-year-old to return to British soil. According to sources such as the Sunday Mirror and The Sun, Everton are interested in a late summer swoop for Pereira.
The former Sporting CP product is eager to get back to higher-level football. With that in mind, Everton are on alert in case he becomes available.
The same goes for Leicester, who are still yet to sign an outfield player during the current transfer window.
Pereira is under contract until 2026 with Al Hilal. However, he has only managed to score three goals for them in 34 appearances.
That said, he has provided 15 assists. In other words, he is contributing to a goal one way or the other about every other game. Therefore, he still has something to offer – especially at his age.
Everton and Leicester will now be keeping a keen eye on how his situation unfolds over the coming days.
The Mirror have reported that there has already been an enquiry from both of the Premier League clubs. They are aware of his interest in getting back to the Premier League.
Matheus Pereira could fill gaps at either Everton or Leicester City
In Leicester’s case, a failure to sign Nicolas Pepe from Arsenal despite a previous interest has prompted their eagerness to explore other options.
Meanwhile, Everton are still bracing themselves for pressure from Chelsea for the signature of their number 10, Anthony Gordon. They have already also lost Richarlison from their attack this summer, but have reinvested with the additions of Dwight McNeil and Neal Maupay.
Perhaps there could be room for Pereira to follow as an attacking midfielder, who could also operate on either wing.
Neither Everton nor Leicester have started the season well; indeed, both are winless from their first four Premier League matches. Adding someone like Pereira – who hit double figures for a relegated team the season before last – could help raise their standards somewhat, even if West Brom’s fate with him in the squad hints he wouldn’t be enough by himself.
Both of his suitors now are big enough clubs for him to consider, although there is a lot of work ahead for both – not just in the transfer market, but also on the pitch – if they are to find more stability.
