Everton Fan View: Let's get Luke Shaw this summer

When Man United bought Luke Shaw in 2014 he was the most expensive teenager of all-time. In that season he was eased into the side and looked like he’d have an impact for years to come. The season after he started every game, before horrifically breaking his leg in September of 2015, and things haven’t been the same since.

He wouldn’t play again in that season and didn’t play a competitive football match for 11 months. When someone comes back from such a long injury, they take a long time to get back to the level of ability they had beforehand. When you return to a club like Man United, you are unlikely to be given the time required to work your way back to your top level.

With Seamus Coleman, Everton didn’t have the same level of competition for places and was always going to be given a starting spot once he returned. Coleman has done well since his return, and hopefully the club will see the best of him next season.

Time to replace Baines

His full-back partner is one of the best players Everton have had this millennium, in Leighton Baines, but his time as an Everton starter must be coming near an end. He is 33 now, but more important is the string of injuries he has suffered in recent years. One of the biggest negatives of this season was Cuco Martina having to play out of position at left-back.

Everton has to strengthen the position and they either have to find a back-up for Baines, or competition for him. Shaw has had a rocky relationship with Jose Mourinho since the manager’s arrival at Man United and it seems as though he will be available for the right price.

He is still only 22 and hopefully Everton could convince him to make the move to Goodison Park for the sake of his career. There is still a huge amount of potential in a player who has struggled for confidence since his leg break, Everton could give him that confidence while having great competition in the left-back area.

If he is due to leave Old Trafford, then Everton need to make their move. Baines isn’t quite the player he was and can no longer be relied on for injuries. We can’t have a repeat of this season when we were without a natural left-back for so long.

Luke Shaw hasn’t been given the confidence he needs over the last few years. If he becomes an Everton player, he could get that back and we’d have another brilliant left-back for the next 10 years.
