Everton are reportedly edging closer to signing electric Stade Rennes winger Kamaldeen Sulemana, as pressure grows on Frank Lampard ahead of a six-pointer against West Ham on Saturday.
Twitter transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed that Everton are pushing hard to get a January move over the line, in the form of a loan-to-buy agreement as they attempt to work around financial constraints.
Indeed, the Toffees’ budget is severely limited this winter, but the need for quality reinforcements is clear given their dire league position.
Everton currently sit 19th in the Premier League table after winning just three of their first 19 games, and only once in their last eight – which is the Blues’ worst start since 1994.
This weekend’s fixture is key for Lampard, who would almost certainly be sacked if his team lose again, so there is a real need to get new faces through the door as soon as possible.
Scoring goals has been a real issue for the Toffees this season. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has once again struggled with injuries and intermittent form, while summer signing Neal Maupay has scored only one goal this season.
Demarai Gray has put in some decent performances recently, but the likes of Anthony Gordon and Dwight McNeil have been below par, which has left Everton in yet another relegation battle.
This comes much to the frustration of the Goodison faithful, who staged a protest against the board following their defeat to Southampton last Saturday.
Everton are looking to sign several attacking targets as they aim to climb back up the table, but Sulemana seems to be a deal that has a real chance of happening.
According to Romano, Everton are now ‘pushing’ to sign Sulemana this winter and Lampard will hope he can turn his side’s season around.
Speaking on House Of Champions: A CBS Soccer Podcast, Romano said: “It’s not easy for Everton because financially, they don’t have the power to go and sign important players for £40 million or £50 million.
“Also, many players are worried about the situation in the table. It’s normal to see a difficult market for Everton, but they’re trying.
“They are trying in many positions, for example, Kamaldeen Sulemana from Rennes, the Ghanaian winger is a player they really appreciate. They are in negotiations for a loan with buy option.”
The 20-year-old Ghanaian international, typically known as Kamaldeen, has already had a fascinating career.
His career began with the ‘Right to Dream’ academy in Ghana, before joining their affiliate club FC Nordsjaelland in Denmark.
He netted 10 times in the Danish top flight as an 18-year-old, which attracted the interest of several clubs across Europe.
Sulemana eventually joined Rennes for £17.7m in 2021, making him the most expensive player to be sold from Denmark ever.
The youngster showed flashes of brilliance in his inaugural campaign in France, scoring four goals in 20 league appearances for Rennes, as well as a memorable assist in a victory over Paris Saint Germain.
In fact, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is one of his biggest admirers and previously considered him as a replacement for Sadio Mane.
However, a back injury ruled him out of the final months of the 2021/22 campaign, and Sulemana now finds himself behind Amine Gouiri in the pecking order, hence why Rennes could be willing to let him leave on loan.
Sulemana can play on either wing or as a central striker, so the youngster could be the Richarlison replacement Evertonians have been crying out for, if Rennes agree to let him leave in the coming days.
