Everton’s survival hopes have suffered a blow with the news that the club will have little to no funds available to strengthen the squad in the January transfer window.
The Toffees have been working under huge financial constraints due to Financial Fair Play regulations in the last few transfer windows and it is set to be a similar situation in the New Year, TEAMtalk understands.
Everton’s spending in the last four years has put them in trouble with FFP and Goodison Park boss Frank Lampard is unlikely to be handed much of a transfer kitty in January to strengthen his squad.
Lampard knows his squad needs strengthening, especially in attacking areas, in January if the club are to avoid another relegation battle in the second half of the season.
Pressure is growing on Lampard following a poor run of form which leaves them just one point above the relegation zone.
Saturday’s humbling defeat to Bournemouth saw angry exchanges between Everton fans and players at the final whistle just to add to the mood of discontent surrounding the club.
Everton recruiters looking at loans and free agents
With less than two months to go until the winter transfer window opens, clubs will be using the World Cup break to plan for signings in January. But Everton are set to find themselves restricted to loan or free signings.
Everton spent money to sign the likes of Amadou Onana, Dwight McNeil and Neal Maupay in the summer transfer window. But that was funded by the big-money departure of Richarlison to Tottenham.
Everton’s recruitment team are now set to look at the loan and free agent market to see if they can bring in new signings in January and their financial situation will again raise fears the club may need to sell players to raise transfer funds.
At the same time last year, Everton signed three players on permanent deals and two on loan. Only time will tell how many new recruits they are able to bring in this time around.
