An Everton attacker has been warned off a potential transfer to Tottenham, with a pundit naming one key reason why he would struggle in north London.
Everton sit just above the Premier League relegation zone, occupying 17th place with 14 points. They won just three out of 15 games before the winter break began.
Frank Lampard came under pressure in the build up to the World Cup. Everton failed to win any of their final four matches in all competitions, while also being beaten in three of those outings.
Everton chiefs are sticking with Lampard though and believe he is the right man to take them up the Prem table.
One reason for Everton’s recent struggles is their lack of goalscoring threat. They have found the back of the net just 11 times in the league so far. Only Wolves have scored less than the Toffees, while Nottingham Forest are also on 11 goals.
Everton need their attackers to find some form pretty much as soon as domestic football restarts.
One of the few players to have got among the goals this term is winger Anthony Gordon. After netting four strikes in the whole of last season, he is already on three goals this time around.
And Gordon looks like he could enjoy a purple patch following the end of the World Cup. In Everton’s recent mid-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers, the 21-year-old bagged a hat-trick to help his side complete a comfortable 5-1 win.
Everton man told to remain at Goodison Park
Gordon has been linked with a move to Spurs in recent months. And insider Dean Jones reckons the transfer will go through next summer.
Former striker Kevin Campbell, though, has told Gordon to stay where he is and reject Spurs’ advances. Campbell thinks Antonio Conte’s rich attacking options would make the young Englishman a failure, should he move to Spurs.
“Where are Spurs going to play him?,” the pundit asked during an interview with Football Insider.
“They’ve got [Harry] Kane, Son [Heung-min], Richarlison, [Dejan] Kulusevski, Lucas Moura – where does Gordon fit in? I just don’t know.
“He’s making waves and doing pretty well at Everton. But it’s potential that you’re buying. I just don’t see him starting for Spurs.
“He would have to develop into a starter in that team.
“Spurs aren’t the only team after him, of course – Chelsea are after him too.
“But I just don’t think he goes to any of those sides right now and starts the number of games he will want.”
Campbell brings up a very good point. Even though Gordon is turning into a very good player, he is not better than Kane, Son or Kulusevski.
That trio is forming a deadly partnership up front for Conte. And the boss will not want to break it up by signing Gordon.
If the move did happen, Gordon would have to sit on the bench and act as a backup. This would impact his development and potentially stop him from becoming a full England international in the future.
Therefore, it would be a good idea for the Liverpool-born winger to remain at Everton for the next few years. Then, if he becomes a real force in the Prem, he can make the switch to a ‘Big Six’ club.
