Ruben Vinagre is reportedly close to a Premier League return with Everton ready to take the former Wolves man on loan with an option to buy.

Vinagre joined Wolves in 2017 when Kevin Thelwell was a key member of their recruiting staff. Now director of football at Everton, Thelwell could sign the left-back for a second time.

According to Portuguese source Record, Vinagre is close to joining Everton, which is why he has been left out of the pre-season preparations of current employers, Sporting.

They only signed him on a permanent basis this year after having him on loan from Wolves. But they are ready to immediately send him elsewhere if they can recoup their investment.

Hence, Everton would have the option to sign Vinagre for €10m (£8.4m) after his impending loan spell at Goodison Park.

As part of the agreement, the Toffees would be covering Vinagre’s wages in full for the duration of his loan. He earns somewhere in the region of €800,000 as a net annual salary, which works out at around £13,000 per week.

Should the deal go through, Vinagre would be competing with Vitaliy Mykolenko for a place at left-back. It remains to be seen what happens with other option Niels Nkounkou, who spent time out on loan last season.

During his previous spell in English football with Wolves, Vinagre racked up 70 appearances, scoring three goals and providing two assists. He was part of their promotion-winning squad from the 2017-18 Championship season.

He then had 32 Premier League appearances to his name across the ensuing two seasons. A couple more came in the formative weeks of the 2020-21 campaign before he began a series of loan spells.

Vinagre spent time with Olympiacos, Famalicao and finally Sporting. Now, though, the Lisbon side are already looking to move him on after a season in which they used him 18 times.

Ruben Vinagre move an intriguing one

In the process, he could get the chance to return to the Premier League, where Thelwell retains some faith in his abilities.

Record previously reported that Vinagre was also a target for Nottingham Forest and Fulham. However, it seems Everton are about to welcome him to their group instead.

There was previously little indication, if any, that Vinagre could be a target for Everton this summer.

But things seem to have progressed quickly and he could now be on the verge of a Premier League return.

After falling out of favour at Wolves, he could have something to prove. On the other hand, it may be a cause for concern.

But he would be approaching his new challenge as a fresh chapter. Perhaps he could put how his Wolves career ended behind him – as well as Sporting’s sudden decision to get rid of him – and find more freedom at Everton.

Vinagre would be their second signing of the summer after James Tarkowski.
