Everton vs Arsenal - LIVE!

Everton’s winless run came to an end in dramatic fashion as Demarai Gray’s stoppage-time strike secured a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Arsenal at Goodison Park.

The visitors took the lead through Martin Odegaard’s volley at the end of the first half, moments after Richarlison had a goal disallowed for offside following a VAR check.

Richarlison had another goal ruled out by VAR just before the hour mark, this time an even tighter decision, before he drew the Toffees level with a 79th-minute header when Gray’s shot came back off the bar.

Gray then secured Everton’s first victory in nine Premier League outings by sending an effort in off the post in the second minute of additional time.

The game ended with the crowd in delirium, having earlier seen some Everton fans leaving their seats in a protest over the running of the club.

Arsenal have now lost their last three league matches away from home, and once again looked uncomfortable holding on to a lead.

Arsenal player ratings: Odegaard shows moments but Lacazette struggles

Benitez wants the club to stick together

22:36 , Matt Verri

“It is clear, when the fans, the players, everybody sticks together we are stronger.

“The reaction of the team to the goals that were disallowed and conceding a goal at the end of the first half, we still scored goals and reacted. Every player and fan is expecting that.

“Everybody is really pleased and hopefully it is the right step forward.”

Odegaard: Arsenal afraid to lose

22:29 , Matt Verri

“It’s a hard one to take. I think in general we were not at the level we needed to be at today.

“We had some good moments but we have to do much better. We should have been better.

“It’s hard to say. That’s just how it is sometimes. It’s hard to say exactly what happened. We have to do better when we have that lead. We stopped playing and gave them the game they wanted to play.

“I think it is [a mindset problem]. When you’re leading 1-0 you get afraid to lose the win and in my opinion that’s what we did wrong today. You go for the second goal and that was the intention but we didn’t manage to do that on the pitch.”

Gray a happy man after earning the victory

22:24 , Matt Verri

“It was a crazy moment. My best moment here so far.

“It was important for us to get that win. As a group we have gone through this bad patch but we have stuck together.

“With the fans like that, behind us for the whole game, it’s more than deserved.”

Seamus Coleman’s reaction

22:15 , Matt Verri

“We knew whatever goes on behind the scenes, whatever goes on, the fans always come here to support us. They need to see a reaction.

“They got behind us from minute one to minute 90 and got us over the line. Our performance showed that.

“I have been here 12 years. You take the good with the bad. But One thing they do for 90 minutes is support you.”

Everton 2-1 Arsenal

The Toffees have done it! Gray’s strike in injury-time gives them victory, and their long winless run is finally over!

Aubameyang misses a huge chance with the final kick of the game to equalise for the Gunners... that sums up their performance. Arteta’s side were really, really poor, and they’ve paid the price late on.

21:55 , Matt Verri

90+5 mins: Iwobi to seal it... Ramsdale saves well.

Everton break and Iwobi is clean through, but he can’t get the goal against his former club. Likely won’t matter though...

GOAL! Everton 2-1 Arsenal | Demarai Gray 90+2 mins

21:51 , Matt Verri

It’s a stunning goal, and it could be enough to end Everton’s long winless run. Picks it up on the left wing, cuts inside Tomiyasu, and rifles a wonderful effort into the far corner. Ramsdale barely moved.

21:50 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Six minutes added time.

Nketiah plays in Odegaard, and he delays to get it back onto his left foot. That gives Coleman time to slide in and block the shot.

21:48 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Doucoure drives into the box, and he fires an effort at goal. Doesn’t catch it though, easy save for Ramsdale.

21:46 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Changes from both sides. Aubameyang on for the Gunners, replacing Lacazette.

And for Everton, former Arsenal man Iwobi is brought on, with Gordon making way.

21:44 , Matt Verri

84 mins: How one earth has Nketiah not put Arsenal back in front?!

Superb play from Saka on the right wing, and he curls a ball in to the far post. Nketiah is free a few yards out, but somehow heads it against the post and it bounces back off him out of play. Terrible miss.

21:41 , Matt Verri

82 mins: What a block from Godfrey!

Nketiah plays a low cross into the box, and Odegaard is free 12 yards out as it rolls towards him. Sets himself and sends an effort towards goal, but Godfrey comes flying in to the block.

Simon Collings at Goodison Park

21:40 , Matt Verri

Finally Richarlison has his goal and now Goodison is really rocking. The home fans aren’t settling for a point. Arsenal under the cosh big time.

GOAL! Everton 1-1 Arsenal | Richarlison 79'

21:39 , Matt Verri

Demarai Gray bends a wonderful effort towards the far corner, and it smashes off the bar.

Rebounds comes back out into the box, and Richarlison is alert to send a looping header back over Ramsdale and into the net. Everton level.

21:37 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Gray into the box, but Partey is on hand to get it away before it can fall to Gomes.

Tomiyasu then uses his body well to see the ball out of play. Gives Arsenal a chance to kill Everton’s momentum a bit.

21:36 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Tavares now down for Arsenal. Gordon caught him for sure, and caught him high on the shin. No free-kick given though.

Everton flying into everything now.

21:34 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Odegaard shown a yellow card for time wasting. Arsenal are going very early with that.

No rhythm to the game in the last five minutes, so many stoppages and delays.

21:32 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Holgate goes down under a challenge from Lacazette and wants a foul. Nothing given. Nketiah knocks it past Holgate and goes down himself... nothing given.

Granit Xhaka then kicks it straight out of play. Arsenal can’t afford to keep dropping deep and inviting the pressure.

21:30 , Matt Verri

71 mins: The Brazilian is off for Arsenal, and he’s replaced by Eddie Nketiah.

Looks like he’s going to go out to the left wing, with Saka staying on the right. Lacazette in the middle.

Doucoure fouls Gabriel in the box, free-kick given. More furious boos from the Goodison faithful.

21:29 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Martinelli goes down with cramp, which the home crowd do not take well.

Arteta uses the chance to gather his team round, and give some instructions to them all. Big 20 minutes ahead for the Gunners.

Simon Collings at Goodison Park

21:27 , Matt Verri

Arteta is getting more and more animated on the touchline as the game goes on. Arsenal just haven’t been at it tonight and it’s giving Everton hope.

21:24 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Tierney off for Arsenal. Arteta not wanting to risk too much on his return to the starting line-up. Tavares on in his place.

And an Everton change. Andre Gomes on, Townsend off.

21:23 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Townsend goes deep... way too deep. Godfrey was at the back post waiting, but it’s over his head.

Plenty of frustration at Goodison Park, things have not gone the way of the home side tonight.

21:22 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Saka’s ball into the box nearly onto the head of Martinelli, but Everton clear and they can break.

Gordon chops inside Xhaka, and he hauls him to the ground. Nothing subtle about that. Xhaka back into the team, and back into the referee’s book.

21:19 , Matt Verri

60 mins: And it’s very nearly a repeat of the first half... Arsenal close to doubling the lead.

Martinelli played in and he’s round Pickford, but the angle is really tight. Floats it back towards goal, but it lands on top of the net.

Simon Collings at Goodison Park

21:18 , Matt Verri

Huge boos around Goodison Park as that goal is chalked off. Fans thought the days of marginal offside calls were gone...

21:18 , Matt Verri

It looked like he was onside in real time, but replays show it is very, very tight.

IT’S RULED OUT! He is a matter of millimetres off, but that’s enough. Arsenal have got away with another one.

Mikel Arteta’s side have to make this fortune count.

GOAL! Everton 1-1 Arsenal | Richarlison 57'

21:17 , Matt Verri

Everton are back level, and it’s from the expected source. Allan plays it inside to Doucoure, who drives forward and slides it in to Richarlison.

He finishes really well at the near post past Ramsdale. VAR are checking it though....

21:16 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Partey steals it in midfield, and Arsenal break. Tierney back to Xhaka, who is very close to playing it back through to the left-back.

Everton break, and try and play Gray in. Xhaka closes the gap, and it’s smashed up field.

21:14 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Arsenal certainly improved after the break. Martinelli flicks it wide to Tomiyasu, and his ball in is a good one but it’s headed away.

Xhaka then plays it out to Tierney on the left, and he whips in a brilliant ball. It’s in front of everyone though, with no Arsenal player making the run into the six-yard box. The ball in deserved better.

21:12 , Matt Verri

53 mins: They really should have made more than that.

Angle wasn’t great for the shot for a left-footer, so Odegaard swings it in to the back post. Gabriel has so much room, but heads a tame effort straight at Pickford. Was completely free.

21:11 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Good ball in from Odegaard, falls to the back post. Coleman and Xhaka both stand off each other, waiting for it to bounce. Richarlison brings down Saka, and it’s another free-kick for the Gunners.

21:09 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Arsenal with the comfortable possession at the start of the half. Everton happy to let Gabriel and White have it on the halfway line.

Godfrey then fouls Saka, and he’s shown the yellow card. Not a good challenge at all. Lucky to avoid red in the first half, but into the book now.

21:07 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Not Ramsdale’s most composed moment, but that was a difficult ball to deal with.

Gordon loops a ball miles into the air, and it’s dropping right under the bar as Richarlison comes rushing in. Ramsdale pushes it over the bar.

He then claims as Gray whips it back into the box.

21:04 , Matt Verri

Players back out. Everton need to get back on terms quickly you feel, or the crowd are going to become increasingly agitated.

Back underway at Goodison.

The Gunners burst into life

21:02 , Matt Verri

20:59 , Matt Verri

Arsenal certainly have to improve though, even with that late goal. Two shots for them in that first-half, and no promising attacks to speak of before Tierney ran down the left and put in a great ball.

The Gunners sat deep and paid the price once they took the lead against Man United. Will they be more positive this time?

Everton were this close to taking the lead...

20:55 , Matt Verri

Simon Collings at Goodison Park

20:50 , Matt Verri

Finally a piece of quality and Arsenal score. That was nice build-up play, but the best bit was Odegaard’s quality. Excellent technique.

GOAL! Everton 0-1 Arsenal | Martin Odegaard 45+2 mins

20:48 , Matt Verri

Arsenal have been so poor all half, but they have the lead seconds before the break.

Tierney back in the side and bursts down the left wing. Puts in a great ball, and Odegaard cushions the volley past Pickford. Lovely finish.

Simon Collings at Goodison Park

20:45 , Matt Verri

If Arsenal don’t take that disallowed goal as a wake-up call they may as well have stayed in bed this morning.

20:45 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Everton have the lead!

It’s such a soft goal for Arsenal to give away. Gabriel gives the free-kick away, and Everton can put the ball into the box.

Townsend floats it in, and Richarlison heads it past Ramsdale into the far corner. Tomiyasu dropped really deep, past the rest of his teammates and kept Richarlison onside.

NO HE HASN’T! VAR rules it out for offside. The Brazilian’s knee was just off.

20:42 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Both sets of fans now amusing themselves by singing rivals chants about Pickford and Ramsdale. Could be a tight battle for the England shirt in the months and years ahead.

Odegaard gives it away, and another Arsenal attack breaks down.

20:40 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Tierney wins a corner for Arsenal, and it’s a much better ball in from Martinelli. Partey goes up for the header, and it’s put behind for another corner.

Take two... Pickford flaps at it a bit and just about gets something on it, but the referee blows for a free-kick anyway.

20:39 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Approaching half-time, and neither side have managed a shot on target yet.

Lacazette in for Aubameyang was a big decision by Arteta... it’s not made a huge amount of difference, the Frenchman has barely had a touch.

20:35 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Richarlison tries to flick on a ball into the box, but doesn’t get enough on it.

He keeps the attack going, and fires a ball back in. Eventually comes to Gordon and he has a shot, but Xhaka blocks it well.

Here is that Godfrey incident...

20:34 , Matt Verri

20:34 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Partey loses the ball again in midfield, he’s had a really slow start to the match. Odegaard helps him out though.

Conditions not helping, but this has been a match lacking in any sort of quality from both sides. Tomiyasu tries to play it over the top to Saka, but it’s overhit and out of play.

20:32 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Mina off for Holgate. His return from injury is a short and painful one.

Corner for Arsenal. Really poor ball in, Everton get that away easily.

20:29 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Ben Godfrey could be in real trouble here. He’s caught Tomiyasu with his studs, as the full-back was on the floor. Did not look accidental at all.

Or not. VAR says nothing doing.

20:28 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Gray fires the ball across the face of goal, and it’s not far away from finding Mina in the middle. Just had too much pace on it.

A few Everton fans heading out for the protest, but not many at all. It’s mainly just woken up the crowd, atmosphere really good now.

20:27 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Saka would good strength to ease Richarlison off the ball. Everton starting to build a bit of momentum now, aided by Arsenal giving it away in dangerous areas.

Richarlison has an effort deflected behind for a corner.

Simon Collings at Goodison Park

20:26 , Matt Verri

This is all pretty turgid to be honest and neither side has had a shot on target. Little comfort for the fans who are now being drenched in sideways rain.

20:25 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Tomiyasu intercepts a Godfrey pass, as Everton looked to have some space and numbers in attack.

Gabriel with a dreadful pass out from the back, straight to Gray. Worked into the box, and Doucoure snatches at his shot and it dribbles wide.

20:23 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Thankfully for the Gunners, Saka is up and it looks like he’s going to continue.

20:22 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Saka down after a challenge from Godfrey, and he’s staying down. Not at all what Arsenal want to see. He looks in real pain.

Nketiah out warming up now. Arteta speaking to the fourth official, he’s not happy at all.

20:21 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Arsenal looking for the switch out to Tierney whenever they can, and it’s nearly come off a couple of times. Left-back looks bright on his return to the side.

The Gunners are definitely growing into the match.

20:19 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Arsenal’s best attack of the match.

Tierney nips in front of Coleman, and he space to break into. Plays it to Odegaard, who slides it outside to Saka. He’s crowded out before he can get a shot away though.

Eventually played back to Partey who has a shot from 30 yards. Just about keeps the ball inside the ground.

20:16 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Late challenge from Partey, but Mike Dean plays the advantage.

Played out to Townsend, he cuts inside and takes a heavy touch. Rolls towards Doucoure but he thinks Townsend is going to run onto it... he doesn’t. Arsenal win it back.

20:15 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Tierney down, as he heads the ball out of play for a throw-in and gets a shove from Gordon that sends him tumbling. He’s all ok though.

Everton with just about the better of the opening stages, but there’s been very little action.

Simon Collings at Goodison Park

20:13 , Matt Verri

The first goal feels massive here. It’s a strange atmosphere at Goodison, as you’d expect given Everton’s form, and right now the fans are unsettled at how to react. If they go behind it could get ugly.

20:13 , Matt Verri

13 mins: First shot of the match, and it comes after good work from Demarai Gray.

Richarlison lays it off to him, and Gray drives inside from the left wing. Past White and lets fly from the edge of the area, but he’s off balance and it’s safely over the bar.

20:11 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Both sides looking comfortable enough in possession at the back, but neither able to fashion out a real chance yet.

Everton fans are behind their side, but the frustration is already coming out whenever the players turn and play it backwards.

20:09 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Lacazette drops deep into midfield to pick up the ball, and then loses it. Good challenge on Allan wins it back.

Godfrey then puts in a monstrous tackle on Tomiyasu which the home crowd absolutely love. No holding back with that one.

20:06 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Gunners pushing Everton back, keeping possession nicely. Tierney has room on the left and Xhaka tries to play it out to him, but there’s way too much on the pass and it’s out of play for a goal-kick.

20:05 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Arsenal probing on the edge of the box, but there’s no way through the wall of blue shirts.

Richarlison then breaks and cuts inside Partey well, only to give it straight to a grateful Xhaka.

20:03 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Arteta audibly urging his side forward, shouting at Lacazette to put pressure on the Everton defence.

Godfrey flies forward from left back and gets into the box, but completely loses his footing and the ball runs out.

20:01 , Matt Verri

1 min: Xhaka straight back into the action, winning the ball back of Richarlison and then keeping it well under pressure.

Everton pressing really high early on, they’ll be looking to keep the crowd right behind them.

20:00 , Matt Verri

We are underway at Goodison Park, as Arsenal kick us off.

19:59 , Matt Verri

Arsenal have lost their last two matches away from home in the league, while Everton have gone eight matches without victory at home or away.

It’s got to get better for one of them!

19:56 , Matt Verri

Players out onto the pitch, Lacazette captaining the Arsenal side tonight. Everton out too, and they will be desperate to give the fans a performance that gets them back on side.

19:53 , Matt Verri

Aubameyang has certainly been a way off his best, with no goals in his last five league appearances. But Lacazette hasn’t been in goalscoring form either - he last scored in mid October.

That was his only league goal this season, in four starts and five substitute appearances.

It’s certainly a problem for Arteta, and one he is still trying to find a solution to.

Arteta on Lacazette coming in for Aubameyang

19:50 , Matt Verri

“We made some changes today. You have to freshen up, there’s a lot of games coming up and we need everybody fit and available.

“Auba is more of a threat all the time in behind, his goalscoring positions and opportunities are more coming off that left side.

“Laca is more a link-play player, it’s different.”

Arteta on Xhaka’s return

19:48 , Matt Verri

“Granit’s been pushing all the way every day since he got injured. He’s been training for a few sessions, he looks fit, and I wanted to put him in the team.

“His leadership, his commitment, and obviously the understanding of the game and the quality he has - they are really important for me.”

Warm-ups well underway

19:41 , Matt Verri

Teams are out warming up at Goodison Park. Granit Xhaka leading the way for the Gunners... almost miraculous that he’s even fit, let alone starting tonight.

Says a lot about Arteta’s faith in him that he comes straight back into the side after so long out.

Martin Odegaard’s pre-match thoughts

19:35 , Matt Verri

“It’s always tough to come here, even though they haven’t got the best results lately it’s a strong side.

“To play away from home in this stadium is always tough but these are the games that we want to play in.

“It’s a nice atmosphere, and a night game, and we’re going to enjoy it.”

Simon Collings at Goodison Park

19:24 , Matt Verri

19:12 , Matt Verri

For Everton, Mina does indeed return to the side after a long absence. No Digne in the team, so you’d imagine Godfrey will play at left-back.

Townsend, Gordon, Gray and Richarlison all start, in what looks to be a far more positive team selection from Benitez than we saw against Liverpool.

19:08 , Matt Verri

Big news for Arsenal is that Aubameyang drops to the bench. He’s been on a poor run of form, and Lacazette comes in to replace him.

Smith Rowe misses out after picking up a knock, while Xhaka surprisingly is straight back into the side after returning to training from injury.

Tierney replaces Tavares too, with Arteta making some big calls tonight.

19:02 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney, Partey, Xhaka, Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli, Lacazette

Subs: Okonwo, Holding, Tavares, Cedric, Elneny, Lokonga, Pepe, Aubameyang, Nketiah

19:00 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Pickford, Coleman, Keane, Mina, Godfrey, Allan, Doucoure, Townsend, Gray, Gordon, Richarlison

Subs: Begovic, Kenny, Holgate, Gomes, Delph, Iwobi, Tosun, Gbamin, Branthwaite

18:54 , Matt Verri

Aaron Ramsdale has been enjoying a fine season so far, since his summer move to the club. He’s been one of Arsenal’s best players this season, along with Emile Smith Rowe.

The goalkeeper has been out having an early look at the Goodison Park pitch.

Team news to come in five minutes...

Home side have arrived...

Given how badly Everton have been playing, as well as the continued absence of Calvert-Lewin, it’s hard to see them causing Arsenal too many problems.

The Gunners have been in impressive form on the whole, despite that defeat to United, and would move within a point of the top four with victory.

Arsenal team news

18:29 , Matt Verri

Bukayo Saka is expected to return to the starting line-up, after he was only fit enough to make a cameo off the bench at Old Trafford. Emile Smith Rowe picked up a knock in that defeat, and is a slight doubt for tonight.

Granit Xhaka is back in training after progressing well in his recovery from a knee injury, but is unlikely to come straight back into the side.

Everton could welcome back Yerry Mina after his long-term absence in what would be a huge boost. Andre Gomes also returns to the squad, after a calf problem.

The Toffees will still be without their main man Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought, an absence that Benitez says has played a big part in his side’s dreadful recent form. Tom Davies is also absent.
