Everton 1-0 Bournemouth – as it unfolded

It was do or die Sean Dyche and Everton on the final day of the season as they took on AFC Bournemouth at Goodison Park knowing a win would seal their Premier League survival for another year. And that’s exactly what they got, with Abdoulaye Doucoure volleying home in the second half to clinch a narrow victory in front of a riotous home crowd.

With Leeds losing 4-1 to Tottenham, they went down with a whimper. But with Leciester beating West Ham 2-1 at the King Power Stadium, it made for a nerve-wrecking final day in the relegation battle with plenty of drama.

Doucoure’s eye-catching goal will live long in the memory for Everton fans, with Dyche doing a superb job to save the Toffees after his mid-season arrival following Frank Lampard’s sacking. See how the game unfolded on Standard Sport’s LIVE blog below.

Everton FC 1 - 0 AFC Bournemouth

That’s a wrap!

18:54 , Jonathan Gorrie

Right that’s pretty much us done in terms of our live blog for today – and indeed for the 2022/23 Premier League season.

The drama came at Goodison Park, with Abdoulaye Doucoure making himself an Everton hero with that stunning volley. It earned them three vital points against Bournemouth, with a pitch invasion at full-time showing the full extent of the relief among Toffees fans that they’ve earned Premier League survival for another year.

Signing off. We’ll be back soon, for sure.

Coady lauds Doucoure

18:40 , Dominic Booth

And why not. It was a goal worthy of winning any game, not least a relegation decider.

Pitch invasion

18:33 , Dominic Booth

Some riotous scenes on the pitch at the end of this one, as fans spill out onto the pitch amid a cloud of blue smoke.

Joy and relief are the overriding emotions right now.

FULL TIME!

18:30 , Dominic Booth

It’s all over and Everton are safe! A 1-0 win courtesy of Doucoure’s goal has sealed the Toffees’ survival for another season. Well done Sean Dyche.

18:27 , Dominic Booth

97 min: Leeds are down, having lost 4-1 to Tottenham. Another big delay here, with Everton players down.

18:27 , Dominic Booth

Leicester have won.

Everton have to hold on.

18:26 , Dominic Booth

96 min: Doucoure has the chance to double the lead, and his own tally. He wins a corner, at least.

18:25 , Dominic Booth

94 min: This stoppage time period is going just as Everton would have hoped... so far. Plenty of delays...

But now Pickford is called into action! A very good save to keep out Vina’s fizzing volley.

18:22 , Dominic Booth

91 min: It’s becoming almost too much to take for the Everton fans, as Solanke is flagged offside to alleviate some pressure.

Added time

18:20 , Dominic Booth

90 min: It’s 10 minutes!

(Six at Leicester, by the way)

18:19 , Dominic Booth

89 min: You suspect Everton fans won’t be very happy with the number of added minutes the fourth official’s board displays very shortly. Tension doesn’t even cover it.

18:17 , Dominic Booth

87 min: Everton have the ball exactly where they want it at the moment – with a series of corner kicks. The fans keep cheering on their team.

18:16 , Dominic Booth

85 min: Well played, Alex Iwobi. He picks up the ball on the Everton left and drives at Bournemouth, keeping it within his grasp before firing a shot that’s deflected out for a Toffees’ corner. Gray is the man replaced by Simms, by the way.

18:13 , Dominic Booth

83 min: Jaidon Anthony comes on for Bournemouth, as Everton prepare to bring on Ellis Simms up front, you suspect to hold up the ball in the visitors’ half.

18:12 , Dominic Booth

81 min: Everton’s final ball has been loose in the last few minutes and Dyche is furious at his players for giving it away too easily to let Bournemouth off the hook.

The home side are, at least, defending solidly at the moment. Bournemouth going long towards Moore now.

(Getty Images)

18:10 , Dominic Booth

80 min: Bournemouth set up a dangerous looking attack, but Tarkowski gets a tackle in and Everton break away through Gray. He slips and it’s away harmlessly.

End to end now.

18:08 , Dominic Booth

78 min: More good news for Everton. Pablo Fornals has pulled a goal back for West Ham at Leicester. It’s 2-1 there now.

18:07 , Dominic Booth

77 mins: Time is ticking away, which Everton will not mind, but these delays mean we’ll have a fair amount of added time at the end of the game, which will be nervy.

18:04 , Dominic Booth

74 min: Pickford is finally back on his feet and okay to carry on.. and finally receives a booking.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

18:01 , Dominic Booth

72 min: Some goals are flying in at Elland Road, one apiece though, so it won’t really help Leeds’ fading hopes of survival. It’s 3-1 now and Harry Kane has a brace.

Meanwhile at Goodison, there’s some concern for Pickford, who is getting quite lengthy treatment from the Everton medical staff.

18:00 , Dominic Booth

70 mins: It’s all going on here. Pickford and Coady bravely combine to deny Moore and then there’s some handbags between the pair – with other players charging over to join in the scuffe. Solanke gets a booking for his part in it, so too Adam Smith.

Pickford is down getting some treatment. He and Moore were really scrapping for a moment.

First booking

17:58 , Dominic Booth

68 min: As expected, it’s largely counter-attacking stuff for Everton now, but Gray does well to speed past Senesi and win a free-kick. The Bournemouth defender is booked.

17:56 , Dominic Booth

66 min: A good ball into the box by Garner from the right, but there’s nobody in blue anywhere near the six-yard box.

Does the Everton gameplan change now? Should they shut up shop and rest on their 1-0 lead?

17:54 , Dominic Booth

64 min: Bournemouth are about to bring on totemic striker Kieffer Moore. It’s clear that all of Leicester is behind the Cherries right now.

17:53 , Dominic Booth

63 min: What a hit this was. What. A. Hit.

17:52 , Dominic Booth

62 min: Everton fans might be singing... but Leicester have strengthened their position with a goal from Wout Faes. They lead West Ham 2-0.

This is precarious.

17:51 , Dominic Booth

61 min: How Sean Dyche is keeping his cool right now is anyone’s guess. The rest of the stadium is losing their minds!

Everton are now in the driving seat again.

(Getty Images)

17:48 , Dominic Booth

58 min: Out of virtually nothing, Abdoulaye Doucoure finds something extra special from deep in his locker, volleying into the bottom corner from 20 yards to send Goodison Park absolutely bonkers.

An incredible goal at a vital time for Everton Football Club.

GOAL! Everton 1-0 Bournemouth | Doucoure ‘57

17:47 , Dominic Booth

GOOOOAAALL!!! Doucoure with a stunner!

17:46 , Dominic Booth

56 min: Everton want to get on with things and they’re letting their frustration boil over whenever a Bournemouth player goes down, or if there’s a delay.

Brooks’ knock means he will not continue and Vina replaces him from the bench.

(AFP via Getty Images)

17:45 , Dominic Booth

55 min: A spot of Bournemouth pressure and, my word, how you can hear the tension when Everton are backed towards their own goal in this game. They survive comfortably enough this time.

17:43 , Dominic Booth

53 min: Conor Coady is giving his teammates – and the crowd – a gee-up, with play delayed for a moment. He knows everyone needs a lift.

17:41 , Dominic Booth

51 min: Oh my goodness, Demarai Gray, how haven’t you headed that home?!

It falls so kindly for him to nod into the bottom corner from six yards. But it’s such a tame header and Travers can save.

17:41 , Dominic Booth

50 min: Yet another set piece opportunity for Everton... all the big lads are getting forward for these.

Lerma comes flying in with a block for Bournemouth. Not this time.

17:39 , Dominic Booth

49 min: Leeds are surely down. Tottenham now lead 2-0 at Elland Road.

It’s one of Leicester or Everton.

17:38 , Dominic Booth

48 min: Garner has done pretty well at right wing-back today. Everton get a free-kick in a decent position, a chance to thump one into the mixer. Sadly for them it’s towards nobody and easily cleared by Bournemouth.

(AFP via Getty Images)

17:36 , Dominic Booth

46 min: This is just class end-of-season stuff isn’t it. Bright sunshine leaking through the stands. Games being played all at the same time, news filtering through via mobile phones. Fans going through all the emotions in a matter of minutes.

Great for the neutrals, not so enjoyable for Everton supporters, you suspect.

SECOND HALF

17:35 , Dominic Booth

Right, we’re back under way.

Something needs to change for Everton and it needs to happen inside the next 45 minutes. Let’s go.

17:23 , Dominic Booth

It has been a rather desperate half, especially when it’s come to penalty appeals. Everton must do more – much more.

HT: Everton 0-0 Bournemouth

17:20 , Dominic Booth

Travers saves wonderfully from Garner’s curling effort that seemed destined for the top corner. Close but not close enough.

A frustrating half for Everton comes to a close. They’ve threatened at times, but at the moment they’re heading to the Championship unless they can score – or West Ham hit back at Leicester to do them a serious favour.

A few minutes to breathe and take in the situation.

Added time

17:16 , Dominic Booth

45 min: Bournemouth should be ahead. That’s a massive chance and they’ve botched it. Brooks steamed through, square for Solanke and Mina dived in with a desperate block to stop it going it.

We’ve got three added minutes as the Cherries whip in a harmless corner.

17:14 , Dominic Booth

44 min: Brooks has been really impressive for Bournemouth, especially on the transition, running at Everton’s back three.

It’s been a fairly even half, in truth, albeit with the hosts creating the more clearcut chances.

17:13 , Dominic Booth

42 min: It’s pinball in the Bournemouth box amid more (rather desperate) Everton handball shouts. Kelly blocks from Gray, who thought he was in there.

17:12 , Dominic Booth

40 min: Some worried grumblings circle around this old stadium, after Everton are denied a penalty for a possible Senesi foul on Gray; then Doucoure drills a speculative effort well wide.

It’s not quite happening for the Toffees.

 (AFP via Getty Images)
(AFP via Getty Images)

17:09 , Dominic Booth

38 min: Big chance for Senesi after Bournemouth work a nice corner routine. Wow, that wasn’t far away from Pickford’s far post. VAR are also checking a possible Everton foul and Bournemouth penalty... no alarms there.

17:07 , Dominic Booth

37 min: This could be the goal that sends Everton down, unless they can score themselves. It’s a Bournemouth corner here.

17:06 , Dominic Booth

35 min: Surely Everton have to increase the urgency now. They’re heading down as things stand.

Bournemouth taking their time on the ball... they know what they’re doing.

Leicester goal

17:04 , Dominic Booth

33 min: Oh no, Everton... Leicester are ahead. 1-0 against West Ham through Harvey Barnes.

You can follow that game with Standard Sport here.

17:03 , Dominic Booth

32 min: The Everton fans are demanding a penalty for handball, but there’s nothing doing from VAR this time.

The home team are really pushing now.

17:02 , Dominic Booth

31 min: Massive chance goes begging for Everton!

Gueye latches onto a great ball in behind Bournemouth but lashes his shot hastily over the bar – goalkeeper Travers just got a fingertip, think. Biggest opportunity of this game by far.

17:00 , Dominic Booth

29 min: Everton getting a lot of joy down their left wing at the moment, but Iwobi’s final poor is poor.

Here’s that Leicester chance:

16:59 , Dominic Booth

28 min: Sky’s cameras have just shown Leicester hitting the bar. That’s how close Everton are from dropping into the bottom three. Both games still goalless but there’s concern for Dyche at the moment with Bournemouth probing.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

16:57 , Dominic Booth

25 min: Everton’s service into Gray hasn’t been good enough so far. They work it cleverley down the left and the striker wants it cut back to him on the edge... it doesn’t come.

Still no real glaring chance for either side.

16:54 , Dominic Booth

23 min: Stout defending from James Garner against Outtara and Everton work it forward and get a half-chance for Onana, who heads goalwards from the back post but it’s not troubling the Bournemouth net.

16:52 , Dominic Booth

21 min: Dominic Solanke, with his Liverpool connections of old, is never going to be very popular at Goodison Park. He stayed down a while then after a tangle with Doucoure. Nothing really in it.

Plenty of goals around the league. Everton are content that there aren’t any here, as things stand.

16:49 , Dominic Booth

18 min: McNeil stands up an underpowered cross but then gets it back after a good run, which Iwobi found with a cute ball.

Another Everton corner, as the crowd ratchet up the noise level.

16:47 , Dominic Booth

16 min: ...aaaand it’s Gray who is eventually on the end of the corner, which was half-cleared to the edge of the box. The former Leicester man smashes across the ball and just over the crossbar.

16:46 , Dominic Booth

15 min: Gray is at the heart of everything Everton are doing well, nipping down the channels to get crosses in. He wins his side a corner.

16:43 , Dominic Booth

12 min: There are goals flying in absolutely everywhere... apart from here. It’s a bit stop-start.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

16:42 , Dominic Booth

11 min: Another Bournemouth cross from the right, with Brooks and Smith exchanging passes. Eventually cleared.

Everton are coming under a bit of pressure at the moment.

16:40 , Dominic Booth

9 min: Some nice stuff between Garner and Gray down the Everton right, but the hosts give it away and Brooks counters, before Pickford makes an important claim from a deep Bournemouth cross.

16:38 , Dominic Booth

7 min: The Everton fans are living every kick of this game at the moment, as we get a delay following a bang to the head for Bournemouth’s Adam Smith.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

16:36 , Dominic Booth

5 min: It’s pretty hard to decipher the formation Everton are playing today. The three centre-backs are protected by a whole gamut of midfielders, with Gray and Doucoure vaguely playing in a front two and McNeil wide left.

16:34 , Dominic Booth

3 min: As Gray gets in a cross that is scrambled away, news filters through that Leeds have fallen behind early doors against Tottenham.

Harry Kane’s goal is music to the hears of Everton fans.

16:32 , Dominic Booth

2 min: The first meaty challenge comes flying in from Idrissa Gueye. Bournemouth enjoying most of the early possession, though.

KICK OFF!

16:31 , Dominic Booth

We’re under way amid a cacophony of noise.

16:27 , Dominic Booth

The siren has gone to signal the entrance of the players onto the Goodison Park turf, and cue the Z-Cars theme music. What an atmosphere this is, it’s very loud – the fans know they’ve got a major role to play.

16:23 , Dominic Booth

We’re counting down to kick-off at Goodison. Sky Sports have their main punditry lineup here, are they expecting some drama? Roy Keane’s blue shirt gives a hint to his loyalties in the relegation battle.

The situation

16:09 , Dominic Booth

Expect to hear a lot about ‘as it stands’ and ‘permutations’ throughout today’s 90 minutes.

16:00 , Dominic Booth

Everton fans are really making themselves heard on the streets around Goodison Park this afternoon. They know how important today is.

Goals, goals, goals?

15:53 , Dominic Booth

Everton might be playing it safe with their team selection today, but they can console themselves with the fact Bournemouth have conceded the second most goals of any team in the league. Only Leeds have conceded more.

Then again, only Southampton and Wolves have scored fewer goals than the Toffees. So will they be able to breach the Cherries’ defence?

15:42 , Dominic Booth

Here come the major players in today’s Merseyside drama.

Team news thoughts

15:39 , Dominic Booth

So Sean Dyche has packed the defence and midfield today, partially you suspect due to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s absence up top, with Demarai Gray ploughing a lone furrow up there today. He’s supported by a cast of midfielders, some of whom will be playing as wing-backs – in the shape of Dwight McNeil and Alex Iwobi.

A central defensive trio of Yerry Mina, James Tarkowski and Conor Coady gives the side a very solid look. But are there enough goals in that lineup? That’s a huge question. Everton may have to score if Leeds and/or Leicester go ahead in their games.

15:34 , Dominic Booth

Travers; Smith, Zabarnyi, Senesi, Kelly; Billing, Lerma; Brooks, Christie, Outtara; Solanke.

Subs: Begovic, Lonergan, Holgate, Keane, Maupay, McAllister, Simms, Welch.

15:21 , Dominic Booth

The team news will be announced in 10 minutes. It will be fascinating to see how attacking Dyche goes with his lineup, knowing that a win guarantees safety but that a draw may well be enough.

15:00 , Dominic Booth

Sean Dyche is in rabble-rousing mood ahead of today’s collosal clash at Goodison Park.

Here he is speaking to Sky Sports:

Final day odds

14:46 , Dominic Booth

It’s safe to say the bookmakers fancy Everton’s chances today. They’re the least likely team to be relegated and favourites to grab the three points against Bournemouth today, according to Betfair.

Betfair: Everton vs Bournemouth match odds

  • Everton 4/7

  • Draw 16/5

  • Bournemouth 9/2

Betfair: To be relegated

  • Leeds 1/33

  • Leicester 1/6

  • Everton 3/1

Score prediction

14:27 , Dominic Booth

This is what we’re saying at the Evening Standard ahead for this one...

Its going to be a very, very tense for the blue half of Liverpool. Still, Everton should have enough to avoid defeat to a Bournemouth team playing for very little.

1-1 draw.

Bournemouth team news

14:23 , Dominic Booth

It’s a dead rubber for Gary O’Neil’s side today, but how Bournemouth would revel in putting a spanner in the works of Everton’s survival bid.

The Cherries should have midfielders Philip Billing, Hamed Traore and Joe Rothwell available after their recent absences.

Everton team news

14:16 , Dominic Booth

The major concern for Everton today is the absence of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin due to injury. Nathan Patterson and Ben Godfrey are both sidelined as well.

Vitali Mykolenko is a doubt, but otherwise Sean Dyche has a strong squad to choose from. The official teamsheets will land at 3.30pm but here’s the early team news.

Who needs what on Premier League’s final day

14:08 , Dominic Booth

A simple run-down of the permutations for all three clubs scrapping to stay in the Premier League today:

  • Everton will be safe if they win

  • Or if they equal or better Leicester and Leeds’ results

  • Leicester must beat West Ham and hope Everton drop points

  • Leeds are reliant on Leicester failing to win and Everton losing
