The Toffees have just six games left to try and secure their Premier League status for next season. However, with the team sitting in the bottom three and facing a five-point deficit to Leeds and Burnley, the room for error is none-existent.

Considering Chelsea have won nine of their last 10 away games across all competitions, the task at hand for Everton is a Herculean one. But with the Toffees enjoying good home form, it's certainly not impossible.

The fact Everton are in a relegation scrap can boggle the mind, considering this is a club which has spent over £550million on signings since 2016.

Frank Lampard has been drafted in to try and prevent the club from falling into the abyss of the Championship, but with key players out on the sidelines, he will require every ounce of his managerial nous to mastermind a successful survival bid.

Lampard may be a Chelsea legend, but the Blues have their own goals to think about, and Thomas Tuchel's side will show no mercy as they look to strengthen their position in the top three.

Kevin Friend will lead proceedings at Goodison Park as he takes charge of his 16th Premier League game this season. The 50-year-old has overseen Everton's League Cup exit at the hands of QPR, as well as Chelsea's recent 6-0 thrashing of Southampton. Everton have claimed four points from their last three games, which isn't a bad total considering the level of opposition. Lampard's men enjoyed a 1-0 win over Manchester United and produced a 1-1 draw with Leicester, before falling to a 2-0 defeat in last weekend's Merseyside derby. Chelsea, in contrast, have won four of their last six games in all competitions - including an away win over Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Their last two outings have seen the Blues narrowly beat West Ham 1-0 before facing a 1-1 draw against Man United on Thursday.

In recent weeks, Reece James has produced a string of impressive away performances. The 22-year-old was man-of-the-match in Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Man United, and was also one of the key protagonists in Madrid two weeks ago. If Everton are to pull off an upset against Chelsea, they'll need frontman Richarlison to be on top form. The Brazilian has scored three goals in his last four games - a major improvement considering he scored just four goals in his 21 Premier League games prior.

Last time out

Chelsea 1-1 Everton (Premier League - December 16, 2021)

Rafa Benitez was in charge of Everton when they visited Chelsea at Stamford Bridge earlier this season. Mason Mount opened the scoring in the 70th minute, before Jarrad Branthwaite levelled the score just 240 seconds later.

Everton manager Frank Lampard on whether he would stay at Goodison Park if the club were relegated: "I don't want to get drawn on that question but what I will say is I've loved every minute of being at this club.

"I've been welcomed incredibly well by the fans and I will do everything to get this club back to where I want it to be."

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel on taking over the Stamford Bridge role from Lampard: "He sent me a very kind, respectful message after I took over at Chelsea that meant a lot.

"I was a huge fan of him as a player and he is and will remain a legend at our club and this is a given. I was very happy when he wrote me that message and it was very gentlemanly.

"We didn't have the chance to go out and have lunch and he took the chance to go and take charge of Everton.

"It is a very exciting week for me, I would love to meet him. We need the points, they need the points urgently as well."

Predicted Everton vs Chelsea teams

Overcoming a relegation scrap would be hard with a fully fit squad, but that's not a luxury afforded to Frank Lampard. The Everton boss is without star man Dominic Calvert-Lewin and faces an agonising wait on Donny van de Beek, Andre Gomes, Yerry Mina and Ben Godfrey. Chelsea are also low on numbers, with Ben Chilwell, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Mateo Kovacic out with injuries. There are also question marks regarding Andreas Christensen and Ross Barkley. Possible Everton starting line-up: Pickford, Coleman, Holgate, Keane, Mykolenko, Delph, Doucoure, Iwobi, Gray, Richarlison, Gordon Possible Chelsea starting line-up: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Silva, Rudiger, James, Jorginho, Kante, Alonso, Mount, Werner, Havertz

Everton vs Chelsea prediction

Everton are desperate for points, but desperation doesn't trump quality. Chelsea are fearsome away from home in recent months, and they should bank all three points at Goodison Park. With that in mind, we're backing a two-goal win for the visitors.
