What are your thoughts on the win?

Really happy. We’re in the semi-final. The game started in a way we didn’t want with a very simple goal and then the team had to react in a great way. (They) showed a lot of character and so much desire to turn things around. Even in the first half (when) we lacked some threat, we created two or three big chances and didn’t score. With a few adjustments in the second half we got a grip of the game again and we looked threatening.

It’s like you could see the confidence coming back to Gabriel Jesus in the second half…

I’m so pleased for him. It’s been a long period for him without goals and today, to score three goals, the three types of goals that he scored - and the many actions he was involved in - he looked very sharp. I think it’s a great thing for him and the team that we can rely on a player of such quality. It’s the same with Kieran and other players who haven’t started many games and today they had the chance to do so.

Momentum point about the League Cup true of this Christmas period and not just about potentially winning the trophy?

Yeah, especially when you don’t win, to win the next one is really important. To win it in a difficult situation and context, they played with their starting XI and got their momentum going, but we were able to break it, overcome it and win the game. Really pleased, I think it’s really helpful for Saturday.

How important can Jesus be in the second half of the season?

Yeah, he brings something. He has a quality, a way of creating and innovating situations that is quite unique. So Gabi at that level is a big asset for us.

Why did you feel the need to make so many changes?

I thought it was appropriate and good for the team to make those changes. You are right or wrong in relation to the result basically. I think the players, especially the ones who haven’t played much, deserved to feel important and everything that they earn, with their attitude and their behaviours, the way they train, the way they play when they have chances to feel that it’s worth it. I’m really happy with that.

How far can Jesus go now?

It’s now about consistency. Now this is a moment of spark that will bring so much confidence, not only to him, but to the team as well that we can rely on him to change games. Now we need to take it and give him more games and chances. We need to give him more chances because when a player is in that moment it’s important to continue that.

Are you concerned about a reliance on Saka on Odegaard?

They are two of our best players. But we rely on the team and we rely on a lot of individuals like every other team to perform, to change games, to help us to impact the teams and help us when they’re coming from the bench. It’s really good to see as well.

Was Tierney injury?

No cramp.

You got a lot of joy using him as a winger. What does that tell you going forward?

It’s just playing each player in their strengths. That’s something that we have to continue to learn. Players give you a lot of information. They tell you, not so much by talking, but with a lot of information where they feel more comfortable. Certainly there is a much better fit for him.

How happy are you with Odegaard’s response to being subbed off vs Everton?

Great. Good response. That’s what we want from all of them. That elevates the level and helps to impact the team.

Does Jesus’ hat-trick make your team selection easier on Saturday?

Let’s enjoy tonight and then start to think. It’s good that we have players knocking on the door and are telling the team I deserve to be there. So it’s a good problem to have.
