Gary Neville let loose at Manchester United’s players after they suffered a 4-0 defeat at Goodison Park.

The United legend turned Sky Sports pundit labelled himself ‘furious’ at full-time and called for the club to get rid of the ‘Japanese knotweed’ inside the dressing room.

As well as calling out the players, Neville questioned who was suitable to rebuild the squad at Old Trafford and suggested United are years away from challenging for titles.

Dave Jones (Sky Sports presenter): You blood was boiling before the game, what’s your temperature now Gary?

I’m furious to be honest with you – the fact that he’s (Ole Gunnar Solskjaer) had to go over and apologise for them. I’ve often said that clubs over the last seven years if you have weeds in the garden you have to get rid of them – there is some Japanese knotweed at that football club. And it’s attacking the foundations of the house and it needs dealing with properly.

A few weeks ago I said that the fans stuck with Jose Mourinho, then wanted him out at the end – they’re not going to want Ole Gunnar Solskjaer out. Those fans are not going to turn on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and those players heads are well and truly on the line. I watched Manchester City yesterday, who Manchester United are trying to get to in terms of top of the Premier League. Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva – far better players than there are in the Manchester United dressing room who work twice as hard. Everton ran 4KM further in the first half – Everton! You watch Liverpool, their biggest rivals, they die for every single inch on the pitch.

It’s embarrassing just watching some of those out there today. I’m absolutely furious. Full belief in Ole to do what he needs to do. The club obviously will support him. But there is a big problem and that performance today was rancid.

DJ: It’s time to name names Gary?

I don’t need to name names – everyone knows who they are. They’re in the newspapers every day, they’re on social media every single day. He’ll deal with them.

Every single player who does not have the attitude – forget talent. I’ve been, sort of, over the last 12 to 18 months, falling into the trap of talking about ‘oh they’ve got potential, talent’. Forget it – if they don’t work hard and haven’t got the attitude to run around in that shirt, get rid of them. I’m watching players play for Liverpool, players playing for Manchester City and they’re working their absolute backsides off every single week for their football club. I’m watching Manchester United players on that football pitch walk around and saunter around, jogging back. I saw it in Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

I don’t mind losing games. I don’t mind conceding goals. I actually don’t mind giving passes away – I was one of the best at giving balls away – you do not, whatever you do, drop below the standard and work ethic that is expected at that club. They’re falling below it. They got a little bit of a bounce when Ole came in and everyone was blaming Jose Mourininho – oh he’s a bum, a bad manager. Jose Mourinho’s one of the most successful managers of the last 20 years in football. A great manager. In the end he lost all faith in those players. I would imagine now the more Ole Gunnar Solskjaer watches those players, the more he will be losing faith in them. They’re letting him down and they’re letting the club down.

DJ: Are you concerned that they don’t seem to be chasing for a football director, it seems to be moving forward under the same system?

I am concerned. I said before the game that this idea that Manchester United only won the league a few years ago. They’re in the wilderness – it’s seven years. Where do you see the next league title coming from? Yes things can be turned around quickly, but good decisions, big decisions, have to be made quickly. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer alluded to it in his press conference on Friday that he needs to rebuild this team and rebuild this squad. That’s a fact. He also said he needed a few transfer windows.

Real Madrid are rebuilding, Bayern Munich are rebuilding, Arsenal rebuilding, City will get players, Liverpool will go and get players, Barcelona need some players, Manchester United are in a world where they need to compete with those teams to get the best players into the club. Who is rebuilding this squad for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, for the Manchester United fans?

I’ve asked that question since Christmas, since the start of the season. I don’t believe at this moment in time there is anybody there to be able to rebuild that club from a football point of view in the way that it needs to be built. Might be proved wrong, might be completely out of order saying it. But at this moment in time the evidence is there that something is fundamentally wrong. Yes there was an amazing three months when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over – when he first took over I didn’t expect that he would get the job – he deserves the job, now he needs to be trusted and believed in.

I never wanted David Moyes to be sacked, I never wanted Louis Van Gaal to be sacked and I never wanted Jose Mourinho to be sacked and I never fundamentally believed that it was a managerial problem. I certainly don’t want Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to fall by the wayside, because I love him to bits and the Manchester United fans love him to bits. To protect him and get him successful, which is what we need to get the club back to where it needs to be, he needs to be supported incredibly by good recruitment, good support on the football side and making sure United can get back. It’s a massive, massive job and he won’t be able to do that on his own.
