Rangers Fan View: Everyone has to take their share of the blame for Gers problems

Last week the Rangers support whipped itself up into a frenzy about a possible title race. The last two results have been a big dose of reality and a stark reminder that we would never get near a league title with Graeme Murty in charge.

This season is one that we will look back on with a whole lot of what ifs. We should be in a title race. Instead, we are struggling to finish in second place for the second season running.

At this point in the season, there are certain people who have to take some blame for the ridiculous predicament we currently find ourselves in. That blame lies with the manager and the board who made the ridiculous decision to appoint him.

The board has to take their share of the blame for this. I said before Christmas that the season wasn’t over and they had to appoint a manager and not throw the towel in. Unfortunately, they chased Derek McInnes, who wasn’t good enough, then decided to write the season off completely by hiring Murty. It’s unacceptable.

They have to take credit for the off-field stuff and rightly so. Unfortunately, their managerial appointments have done little to inspire anyone as yet. We have to hope they can, along with Mark Allen, pull something out the bag and give us the proper manager we deserve. More importantly, a manager who will be able to change the losing mentality that engulfs the playing squad at present and get Rangers seriously challenging for honours once again.

Now let’s discuss the man they hired as manager, Graeme Murty. I would love to sit here and blame the board for his lack of managerial ability. However, that is grossly unfair. He wants the job beyond the summer. If he gets it, then god help us all.

Let me say, however, that our best displays this season have come when he’s been in charge. For that, he deserves some praise. That’s where the praise should end. Contrary to popular belief, Murty took over in October, not January. He’s done ok. That’s about it. He’s not done this great job that most people like to tell us he has. It’s becoming a bit of myth. Maybe it’s because people are ultra-positive, I don’t know.

To be honest, this period in charge has merely highlighted his flaws. Having watched his team since the winter break, he is sadly just a Poundland Mark Warburton, married to the 4-2-3-1 the same way Warbs was married to his 4-3-3. He is a reactive manager as shown by the Old Firm match recently and refuses to do anything to combat a three-man midfield when he comes up against it. That level of tactical incompetency is not good enough. If fans in the stands can see this and he can’t – or he can and refuses to address it – we are in trouble going into the last eight league games. I can’t say I am overly confident of finishing in second place at this point.

He’s a nice guy but we need a football manager rather than someone who has been seen chewing his jacket zip more times than he has actually made any changes which have impacted the games he’s been the manager. All of that is before I mention his awful record. So for someone who has said he wants the job beyond the summer, he should be judged accordingly. We should not be re-adjusting our expectations to suit someone who is clearly not capable of doing this role. If we as a support allow this to happen and become apathetic, the club will not get back to winning serious trophies for a long time.

Frankly, seven losses in 21 league matches is not the record of a potential Rangers manager. Furthermore, in normal circumstances, any other Rangers manager would and should be sacked for those stats. Yes, we have played some nice stuff at times, but it’s results that count, winning titles, not being popular. I wish I was in some job above my capabilities and the customers made excuses after excuses for my poor abilities. It would be fantastic.

If this is his job interview, I would not be waiting until the end of the season, I would be telling him now:” Thanks, but no thanks.” I hope the board are thinking the same. It’s been a shambles from start to finish; the only positive I can take is that it should be nearing it’s conclusion very soon.

Mark Allen is the only person who comes out of this scenario with any credit. He had a good transfer window, addressing some issues within the squad. He’s also put his scouting team in place, but the acid test for him in the summer will be finding a manager. I have no concerns about his ability to get good players through the door. However, for this board, they have to hope he comes up with a manager. If he doesn’t next season will be more of the same, another opportunity missed.
