Danny Masterson and Bijou Phillips married in 2011 and Phillips filed for divorce in September 2023
Danny Masterson and Bijou Phillips are parting ways after over a decade of marriage.
On Sept. 18, Phillips filed for divorce, according to TMZ. "Ms. Phillips has decided to file for divorce from her husband during this unfortunate time. Her priority remains with her daughter," her lawyer Peter A. Lauzon told the outlet.
The couple — who have also worked together, in projects including 2009's Made for Each Other — dated for eight years before tying the knot in October 2011. They welcomed their only child together in February 2014.
Recently, Phillips was by Masterson's side during his trial for rape, where he was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison on Sept. 7 after being found guilty on two counts of rape in May. She was in the courtroom — alongside members of Masterson’s family — for the sentencing on Sept. 7, according to Variety.
During the sentencing, two women he was convicted of raping gave victim impact statements and the Judge Charlaine Olmedo told Masterson in part, "Mr. Masterson, you are not the victim here... Your actions 20 years ago were criminal, and that is why you are here," according to the outlet.
After the sentencing, the actress was "distraught," a source told PEOPLE. “She has had a very difficult time since the conviction,” the insider said.
Here's what to know about Masterson's wife, Bijou Phillips.
She’s the daughter of rock icon John Phillips
Phillips is the daughter of John Phillips, the frontman of The Mamas and the Papas. Her mom is South African model and singer Geneviève Waïte, who was John's third wife. Together, they welcomed Phillips on April 1, 1980 in Greenwich, Connecticut.
“She was a beautiful soul, and born from another planet," Phillips said of her mom. "Her ideas, her songs, her voice, and her heart beat to a beautiful African rhythm no one else had and I am so thankful she was able to share it. She was a light, a fairy, and a gift of a creature."
Phillips continued, "The lyrics she wrote on her album were timeless and smart. Her mind was poetry and wit, her sense of humor was quick and dry. She was like a child in a way, who was too smart for her own good.”
She modeled early in her career
As the daughter of a rock legend, Phillips was introduced to the entertainment industry at an early age, and that exposure led to her becoming a model as a teenager.
In an interview with Howard Stern in 2000, Phillips recalled her introduction to the modeling industry, explaining how she was scouted at a horseback riding show. The first gig she booked was the cover of Interview Magazine around age 13.
However, she said she "only did it for about three months," going on to explain the choice her father gave her. "I was like 13," she said. "And my dad was like, 'You can go to New York and model or you can stay in boarding school.'"
In addition to gracing the front of Interview Magazine, Phillips also booked the cover of Vogue Italia in 1995. She also appeared in several Calvin Klein campaigns, among shooting for other publications including Playboy.
She signed a record deal at age 17
Like her parents, Phillips pursued a career in music. At 17 years old, she signed a record deal with Almo Sounds and released her debut album I'd Rather Eat Glass in May 1999. The 12-track body of work remains Phillips' only full-length music release to date.
She’s a television and film actress
Following her foray into music, Phillips took up acting, starting with Sugar Town, an independent film released in 1999.
That same year, Phillips nabbed her first major movie role in James Toback's drama Black and White. Her costars included Robert Downey Jr., Jared Leto, Brooke Shields and Elijah Wood. In 2000, she was cast in Cameron Crowe's semi-biographical musical hit Almost Famous, appearing opposite Kate Hudson and Billy Crudup in the Oscar-nominated film.
In addition to the silver screen, Phillips landed several TV gigs as well. Among them include FOX's sitcom Raising Hope, Hawaii Five-0 and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Her last credit was in 2013, according to her bio on IMDb.
She wed Danny Masterson in October 2011
Phillips and Masterson dated for eight years before tying the knot in October 2011. They wed at a private castle in Ireland.
She shares one child with Danny Masterson
Phillips and Masterson welcomed one child, daughter Fianna Francis, together on Feb. 14, 2014. They announced the news on Instagram.
“Hello friends. Beyond thrilled to announce the birth of our daughter Fianna Francis Masterson! Mom and baby are doing amazing. You can all refer to me as dj dadpants from now on,” Masterson captioned a photo.
She supported Danny Masterson in court
The actress was “distraught” after her husband's prison sentence. “She has had a very difficult time since the conviction,” the insider said. “She loves Danny and has no plans to file for divorce. She will be by his side for it all.”
She filed for divorce from Danny Masterson in September 2023
"Ms. Phillips has decided to file for divorce from her husband during this unfortunate time. Her priority remains with her daughter," her lawyer Peter A. Lauzon told the outlet.
He continues, "This period has been unimaginably hard on the marriage and the family. Mr. Masterson was always present for Ms. Phillips during her most difficult times of her life. Ms. Phillips acknowledges that Mr. Masterson is a wonderful father to their daughter."
