Former Brentford striker Betinho says he “got more calls today than on my birthday” after he was mistakenly named in the Man Utd squad list.
The Red Devils are on the lookout for a new striker in the January transfer window after Cristiano Ronaldo left the club by mutual consent in November.
Ronaldo angered numerous people at Old Trafford when he aired negative views about the club in a controversial interview with Piers Morgan.
And now Man Utd are keen to bring in another striker who can help Marcus Rashford and injury-prone Anthony Martial with the goalscoring burden.
One name Man Utd supporters won’t have expected to see on their squad list is Sporting de Espinho striker Betinho, who made one league appearance for Brentford on a season-long loan in the 2014-15 Championship campaign.
Betinho appeared in United’s squad list on the Premier League’s website ahead of their 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
Speculation mounted online between fans that Man Utd had sorted a transfer quickly and quietly behind the scenes before the Premier League admitted it was a “technical issue” on their part.
Betinho’s name was eventually removed from the website after a couple of hours with the 29-year-old revealing he was bombarded by calls about the website gaffe.
“I only knew it was true when my mates sent me messages and then I confirmed that it was indeed my name on the Premier League website. I got more calls today than on my birthday,” Betinho told Jornal de Notícias.
On Instagram, Betinho posted a screenshot of the Premier League website, tagged compatriots Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot and wrote: “Thank you, Manchester United, see you soon.”
Before jokingly adding to the Man Utd duo: “It’ll be a pleasure to share the dressing room with you.”
Man Utd had no problem scoring on Tuesday evening against Forest and Erik ten Hag is confident they have the numbers to cope if they can’t sign a striker in January.
Ten Hag told reporters: “I never spoke about that I have doubt about that on the counter side. We have (Alejandro) Garnacho, we have (Anthony) Elanga, we have numbers as well, but those four didn’t play two games together. I think only Everton.
“When we can play those front four often together there will be more routines and when we get more routines in we have more of a goalscoring threat and that is what you see tonight, we score three goals. I am quite happy with them.
“When you are critical – and I am – there is room for improvement because we should score more than three goals with the chances we create but I’m happy with creating all those chances.”
