Ex-Hull KR player Todd Carney ready to take on responsible NRL role
Former Hull Kingston Rovers player Todd Carney is to become a junior pathways coach with NRL club the Gold Coast Titans.
After controversies during his playing career, Carney joined Hull KR in 2018, when they were coached by Tim Sheens, who had picked the player for Australia against New Zealand back in 2010. The pair had been in touch over a long period before Sheens signed him and Carney then made his Rovers debut in a 20-16 derby victory away against Hull FC in July, as Craig Hall scored two tries and Danny Tickle added another.
Rovers finished 10th in Super League that year, leading to a seven-game Qualifiers campaign - but that was successful as they avoided going into the Million Pound Game that year and retained their Super League status for the following campaign. But former Dally M medal winner Carney soon returned to Australia after signing a contract to become the captain-coach of Byron Bay Red Devils.

Following past alcohol-related issues, the now 38-year-old former New South Wales player is almost two years clean from alcohol now - and Australia's Daily Telegraph broke the news that he was heading into a new role. His job will come more than a decade after he finished playing in the NRL, having featured for Canberra Raiders, Sydney Roosters and Cronulla Sharks.
His task now is set to be mentoring teenagers from the junior ranks into the first team. In recent times, he has worked in the area there with students struggling to stay in school.
