Fabrizio Romano states Tottenham are yet to begin discussions with Leicester City over the signing of James Maddison, although ‘excellent relations’ could help the move go through.

Maddison is hoping for another top season during 2022-23 after notching 18 goals and 12 assists in all competitions last term. He knows he needs to be in great form if he is to make Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup.

The attacking midfielder helped Leicester reach the semi-final of the Europa Conference League in April. However, they lost to Roma over two legs and Jose Mourinho’s side went on to lift the first iteration of the cup.

Leicester will not compete in Europe in the upcoming campaign after finishing eighth in the Premier League last season.

This has led to rumours that centre-back Wesley Fofana could leave. Chelsea want to sign him, although they will have to spend a massive fee.

Maddison is also being linked with a ‘Big Six’ team. Tottenham reportedly hold an interest in taking the 25-year-old to north London.

On Thursday, pundit Frank McAvennie predicted Maddison to leave Leicester if he doesn’t feel Brendan Rodgers’ side can ‘challenge’ the top clubs in England.

Romano has now provided fans with the latest on the Maddison to Spurs rumours. The journalist states Antonio Conte’s team haven’t yet begun talks with Leicester over the Englishman’s signature.

However, if they do start, then there is one key factor which could result in Maddison linking up with Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and co.

That’s because Spurs apparently have ‘excellent relations’ with those who represent the playmaker.

During an interview with CaughtOffside, Romano said: “There is currently no negotiation between Tottenham and Leicester for Maddison; relations with his agents are excellent but so far the situation is quiet.

“Tottenham have already made a lot of quality signings, and are now only focused on selling Giovani Lo Celso, Harry Winks, Sergio Reguilon and many other players.

“For me, I think James Maddison deserves a top move. But we must also respect Leicester who cannot lose all their top players.”

Having spent £60m on Richarlison and more money on Yves Bissouma and Djed Spence, Spurs are unlikely to move for Maddison this summer.

However, that could change in a future transfer window if Leicester fail to meet Maddison’s ambitions.

His contract with the East Midlands club expires in 2024. That means a transfer to Spurs might occur in summer 2023, once Maddison enters the final 12 months of his deal.

The former Norwich ace has the ability to succeed at one of the Prem’s biggest clubs. And he could work well in a front three involving Kane and Son, too.

However, Conte already has Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Moura as other options in attack. Due to this, one of those players may have to leave, most likely Moura, before Maddison can join.

Meanwhile, one of Spurs’ best players is of interest to London rivals Chelsea, according to a German reporter.
