Exclusive: Coronation Street star Peter Gunn rules out theory over Isabella

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Peter Gunn has stamped out speculation that new character Isabella isn't really Italian.

Fans have been questioning Isabella's intentions since she arrived in Weatherfield to meet Peter's character Brian Packham last month.

When Brian researched his family heritage, he tracked down his Italian cousin Isabella and planned to pay her a visit.

Isabella insisted on coming to Weatherfield instead, using the excuse that her flat in Naples was being renovated.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy at the British Soap Awards 2023, Peter commented: "We've got Brian's cousin Isabella, who's in causing mayhem. She's also causing a bit of a rift between [Brian] and Mary, so who knows what's going to happen?

"Brian does hold something for Mary and he's not letting her know, really. He's keeping it to his heart. There could be something happening."

On the mystery of Isabella's recent behaviour, Peter laughed: "I keep thinking that she'll come out with a broad Lancashire accent at some point!

"But no, she is Italian and she is my Italian cousin. I think she's hiding something back in Italy, but I don't know what.

"I think something's going on, because she wanted to come here, rather than us go there. So she's either running away from something or she's just very unpopular!"

Next week's episodes see Isabella continue to cause trouble when she insults Rita Tanner and claims that Brian needs a younger assistant at The Kabin.

Rita is unimpressed and responds by quitting the newsagents.

Peter added: "Isabella calls Rita an old bag at one point, which is just unbelievable – especially when you're working with Barbara Knox, who's going to be 90 this year, by the way!

"Barbara was amazing and she played it brilliantly, as she always does. I love working with somebody who's going to be 90!"

Peter also spoke about whether Brian and Mary will ever become more than just friends.

He said: "Brian would be desperate for it to become more, but I don't know whether Mary realises or whether she has feelings.

"There was a little bit of something when we did the am-dram together. I'm going to keep plugging away, and see if she'll cave in at some point!"

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
