Spoilers follow from the British Soap Awards 2023, ahead of the TV broadcast on Tuesday (June 6).

Doctors star Jan Pearson has explained why her character Karen Hollins was killed off.

The actress bowed out from the BBC One daytime soap in March, as a heartbreaking episode saw Karen found dead at home on the sofa.

Karen's husband Rob went into denial when he discovered her lifeless body, but he was later forced to accept the heartbreaking news that she had passed away.

The storyline played out on screen as an unexpected twist, rather than being publicised in advance.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy at the British Soap Awards 2023, Jan confirmed: "I asked to die and they were very obliging! They gave me a lovely death, actually – I was very pleased with it.

"Chris [Walker, who plays Rob] was extraordinary. It was great. I was very, very pleased."

She continued: "I'd been there for 14 years and I just wanted to go home. I wanted a dog, so the day after I left Doctors, I picked up my puppy – Dolly the dog.

"And this is my first night away from her since December, so I'm hoping she's behaving herself!"

Jan went on to discuss her future plans, confirming that she'll look for new roles in the future.

She said: "I want to take a break and train my puppy – we're not doing terribly well! She's very naughty, a little minx!

"And then hopefully back into film and TV. I've spent so long on the road that I can't really see myself going back to theatre, but never say never."

Jan and Chris Walker won the Best On-Screen Partnership prize at the British Soap Awards on Saturday evening (June 3), providing a fitting ending to Karen's time on Doctors.

The British Soap Awards air tonight (June 6) at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.

Doctors usually airs on BBC One at 1.45pm from Monday to Thursday and is also available to watch on iPlayer.
